This could well be considered subversive even today…just imagine the earthquake it caused sixty years ago. An incredible live performance for British TV by The Killer , Jerry Lee Lewis.

I’ve just watched the new Beatles '64 documentary on Disney and I have to say that I’m rather underwhelmed.

There is only so much Beatles footage from that time and I’ve seen it presented in a far more coherent way.

Anyway, I have a John Williams documentary on before the match starts, and it’s far better.

Watched Kanonenfieber last week. A mix of thrash, death, and Rammstein style industrial metal

Their new album is one of the best I’ve heard this year. I assume it will rank highly on all the relevant top lists of metal music, i.e. not Kerrang or Metal Injection.

I am not a man

Well, what d’you think I am, a man?

Those mags completely suck nowadays!

I always preferred Smash Hits.

You know I’m not an elitist, a gatekeeper or whatever these fancy terms are these days - but those two properly suck when it comes to judgement of bands’ material, especially the newer ones. Whatever crap Metallica releases gets on the top list. Nu metal crap is always put together with proper metal, usually given a prominent spot on those lists. Anything that is considered deathcore is also given publicity because it’s heavy. Also, hardcore bands, no matter how much respect I have for the genre, shouldn’t feature on metal lists - the clue’s in the name! Rant over.

I was always Sounds for rock and Record Mirror for pop.

Record Mirror always had a section for DJs which rated songs based on bpm. I’m surprised that the metal mags never picked up on that classification system.

RW, I’m disappointed. The NME was far superior to Sounds.
I’m talking about 1977-87 or so.

I had a pal who bought the NME so I got Sounds, which was always a bit more hard rock orientated. I got the Record Mirror via a friends brother who was a DJ.

One of my mates started a Music League thingy…

Most recent round was One Word Title.

Tool - Stinkfist

Did not get a single vote.

I may need new friends.

@Nikola other than Kanonenfieber I’ve not heard of most of these bands

Why are Popmatters passing judgment on metal?

Literally no idea.

I’ve heard about a half of these bands (just to confirm that they are not my cup of tea for different reasons - either too technical, or the vocals are purportedly buried in the mix to sound cavernous) but it’s a strange one - it’s like they decided to make up a list that mostly consists of tech death bands but without Blood Incantation (although their other band, Spectral Voice, is there). Also, no Judas Priest?!

Looking forward to seeing Blood Incantation live next year. They’re in a small London festival with Decapitated and Warbringer, among others.

Yeah, it’s very eclectic in its picks. And this is why I never really go for any such lists. I listen to what I like.

Not having a Priest is a joke.

Thing is, throughout my whole life, I’ve mostly relied on such websites to discover new bands. Angry Metal Guy and Metalstorm are my go-to websites now, aside from Metal Archives where click on a band name and look for Similar Artists tab.

Blood Incantation are an awesome band but one I can’t get into because of vocals. I believe their music would work much better for me if they had vocal style and production like Death, Tribulation or Horrendous.

I’ve recently discovered a lot of bands through either going early and catching opening bands or finding them at festivals like Bloodstock, Download, Desertfest etc
