More dreamy Vangelis, because seriously, how can you live without sometimes listen to such songs ? I mean, how ? Not possible.

@Magnus, Immortal is one of rare Norwegian black metal bands, at least of those early ones, that didn’t fall under Satanic or anti-religious moniker. I’ve always been conflicted about black and death metal - I love the sound but lyrics more often than not clash with my personal beliefs. That said, I did learn to play some riffs from Freezing Moon by Mayhem and Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone by ear. :joy:

Speaking specifically about Norwegian bands, I’ve always been impressed with Emperor and Enslaved, though, I’d say they are among the best metal bands of all time, not just in their particular subgenres.

By the way, are you familiar with Polish black metal band called Mgła? They are more melodic than Norwegian bands (and even more pessimistic in their world views), I think you might like their sound.

Many think Emperor is the best one. Some say Darkthrone (remember fighting about this back when I was 18 , lol), but others say Immortal. I like Immortal the best. The satanic stuff is usually theater except in a very few special cases. Immortal is all theater, no satanism of any sort involved. Enslaved is the same, they don’t even use the make up, haha !

I also like Borknagar, if you have heard about them. I guess I like something like 8 Black metal bands (we have so many) . Not of huge fan of the genre otherwise. Death Metal and Hardcore I really don’t like, particularly hardcore. That’s just white noise to me tbh.

Mgala I haven’t heard. As for Mayham, never been a fan. Got friends that love them, but it is a bit too primitive for my taste. Seen them live though, and that was fun. Most interesting thing about that concert was that it was in Kristiansand, were Evangelistic Christendom is very strong, so there were something like 10 newspaper articles in various papers before that concert and much, much drama. All I can remember is that they threw some swine heads to the crowd. I guess I headbanged, I was young, but not my favorite sound or style really.

But those songs I posted by Immortal are all very, very good. If you have not heard them, imo you should !

Yes, yes, I’m familiar with Borknagar (and Vintersorg, for some reason I don’t separate those two, I think that those bands shared members across Norway and Sweden, the core of their sound is similar to me). Believe me when I say that I’ve put in a fair few hours researching metal scenes, especially those of Northern European countries! :joy:

It seems that in order to have a really good metal band, the minimum of requirements is to have been born there, especially when you want to play variations of black and death metal. That said, majority of time, when I get to meet someone from Sweden or Norway and ask them about whether they are metal fans, they give me these strange looks and say that kids there mostly listen to house and whatever the latest mainstream poison is.

Norwegian metal music is bigger in Hellas than in Norway, and it was not before cirka around 2000 that it became “clean”,and considered part of the proper music scene. It all started underground in the 90s after all. In Finland it is different though !

All getting a bit Heavy in here -

Here’s the original version of Wonderwall from 1967 - That should lighten things up.

Well a little lighter but sticking to the Scandinavian metal type there’s HIM. While this band / singer might be drifting too far towards that satanic side mentioned above there’s no doubting the quality of Velle Valo’s voice.

There’s several versions of this track but the acoustic one does it for me. they do some other great tracks as well I think. Including a good version of Wicked Game (Chris Isaak)

With all due respect, sir, they are anything but Satanic - but they knew how to use some of that imagery to get under people’s skins and into their ears. And I love Ville Valo, man, does he have a fantastic voice… I’ve spent my teens trying to sing like him, took me years to realise that some people are just born with a gift (and that I completely suck). Five octave range, if I’m not mistaken, but it’s not about that, his delivery is unlike anything I’ve heard in rock’n’roll. And he’s a super cool person, as simple as that.

I’d be one of those people I guess. Lyrics are pretty dark in that song though. Still, that voice.
