Late to the game (too late even)

Phil Campbell (ex Motörhead) and the Bastard Sons (actually his own boys) is a cracking hard rock band. Pity I didn’t take the opportunity to go see them. RIP Phil

Nedra Talley, the last surviving member of The Ronettes has died. Thought I’d leave this here:

I know this isn’t an original thing to say, but I went through half a g in south Philly this eve, couldn’t get a taxi home and so I walked up Broad whilst listening to Portishead, Dummy through Third. What a terrific fucking trio of records.

Even as a metalhead, there are non-metal bands, records or songs that I love or at least respect and admire. Portishead is one such band - as a side note, that live version of Roads (you know which one I’m talking about) elevates the already amazing, gut-wrenching original. I can’t believe they made only three albums.

Beth Gibbons released a solo record in the last year or two. It’s not Portishead, but she still sounds phenomenal.

What do you think of “blackgaze”?

I dig it. I’m actually aware that black metal “purists” are against it because… I don’t have a realistic clue why anyone would be against good music, especially when it breaks genre boundaries, but there is awesome music that falls under that moniker.

As for Beth, I unfortunately haven’t followed her career outside of Portishead. I don’t doubt that she still sounds great, though, she’s always been amazing!

She did that record with Rustin Man (Talk Talk bass player), which was very mellow but nice as well, saw that live at the time (jeez, just realised that was more than 20 years ago, didn’t seem that long)

20 years ago was the first time I heard of her - which is 2016 if my maths is correct, obviously!

Here’s a track off that album

She’s outstanding. She’s obviously at home at home with orchestra and jazzy arrangements but I wish she did shoegaze or, dare I say, collaborations with certain metal bands. Hell, if Jarboe can make an album with Neurosis…

Joshua Idehan - i know you’re hurting, everyone is hurting, everyone is trying, you just have to try

this guy is perfect for this time, equal parts uplifting, social commentry, funny and in no small way a fucking good groove… give him a listen, bit jazzy, bit gospelly, bit dancy, bit ‘the streets’, and alot ‘joshua Idehen’

‘learn to swim pt 2’ is a personal favorite, for the lyrics alone, far from his standard effort though, his catalogue deserves a listen
