Nirvana were great but Pearl Jam, AIC and Soundgarden were much better musicians and their songs had more depth and layers musically.
If you can play guitar you can learn a Nirvana song in no time. Try learning some Pearl Jam…its really hard.
But I love them all. All great bands.

Good assessment, I agree in that Pearl Jam’s sound is not really Grunge, I think that because they were from Seattle, they were, as you say lumped under the Grunge banner.
I will definitely give them a lot of air time over the coming weeks. As I mentioned, I don’t know why I didn’t give them much attention when I was younger.
It would have been interesting to see where Nirvana’s sound moved/developed. I think I recall Kurt mentioning in an interview the next album would be different. Maybe, that was one of the triggers to his Suicide, the pressure to deliver.
There have been a lot of bands who have faded away after a great couple of albums. Kings of Leon are a band that springs to mind from recent times.
There are other bands, like the Artic Monkeys who have managed to remain relevant whilst progressing their sound. In fact as with Pearl jam, there are not many Bands/artists who have managed to create a Portfolio/catalogue of music without a period of ‘Meh’.

. I chucked him into the list because of the notoriety he gained from a short time in the spot light. If he had lived longer he most likely would of faded into obscurity.

I am a Nirvana fan, but I Love music in general. I prefer heavier music, but only tonight I was listening to Frankie Valli.
What I love about music is that it is so emotive and despite a genre not being your go to, you can often relate to it in some way.
Good post and that’s why Music is so enjoyable and debatable.
I will not argue against the other bands being better musicians or their songs having more depth and layers, because that is their identity. I don’t love Nirvana because I believe that they are the best musicians, or that their music has more depth/layers. I love them because of their sound, Loud-quiet-Loud, their rawness and I guess their vulnerability.
Regarding being better musicians, Grohl hasn’t really been limited by his lack of ability. Since Nirvana, he hasn’t really been short of drumming work. Infact, his Guitar work/song writing hasn’t been too shabby either .

Jimi Hendrix would have produced some great music if he’d lived. He was going in interesting directions when he died and starting to explore jazz and funk.
Otis Redding had reached a crossroads having gone as far as his voice would let him with his ‘shouting’ style. It would have been fascinating to see what direction he’d have taken.

The stranglers is a great album too.
I started into hard rock and heavy metal first. And a lot of time had passed before I ventured into punk and then grunge.
All those fine music genres simply dead now with the new fangled stuff
And coming to heavy metal now and Metallica. Lars ulrich is a pathetic drummer.

I love Bass driven bands. Greenday in their early days being a prime example. Also, a bit avant-garde the band ‘The Rapture’.
Yeah I mean Grohl is a great musician you can have that one . Im not a huge Foos fan. I like the first 2 albums and Wasting Light.

For me the first album is a “banger” and then it is just the odd song or two over the rest of their catalogue.
I always questioned whether the first album was Kurt’s stuff, but having researched recently I think this idea was misplaced.
