It actually surpasses the original and Im a hardcore Bowie fan!!!

45yrs ago Bowie sang back-up and played the sax on this track…
Hard to believe some of us on here actually dressed up like this in the 70’s… Eeeeeek!!!
OH wow, they’ve fckd everything up about the song here, music and all.
With reference to Nirvana’s earth shattering unplugged set, still to this day it stirs me. Probably complicated by the loss (murder) of Kurt. Ive heard some claim he wasnt that good etc, and you can clearly see he ripped a few tracks from earlier artists, notably the riff to ‘Come as you Are’ was stolen from Geordie of Killing Joke, but he gave us a great deal of originality and made the 90s an interesting musical decade.
Cant fail to mention Bowie, who’s song writing skills are top of the game, but with Man Who Sold the World, how prescient to have prefigured Bill Gates.
Anyway, this one is my pick of the Unplugged set:
it’s David Grohl that stands out for me. Drums here and Foo Fighters now. He knows his onions.
Actually that Foo Fighters acoustic album is awesome as well. I think I prefer it to the Nirvana one. THe Nirvana one was the trend setter though.
I think they were all good, even Chris Novoselic, was a great bass player. A better drummer than front man, dont you think?
BTW still to this day, neither Chris or David will talk about Kurt’s death.
Otherwise,I know nothing of Foo Fighters but Im into that style, just never bothered to have a listen. Isnt the Colour and the Shape the one to have? Suppose when they were in their late 90s pomp I was all Stone Temple Pilots.
To be honest I couldn’t tell you, other than as a show man he’s miles ahead of Kurt. But Kurt had that style I guess.
Foo Fighters have many a fine tune to be fair. They’re damn good and have a really tight wall of sound kind of thing. Greatest Hits is a good a starter as any to be fair but I’d certainly recommend the unplugged album to anyone. I think it’s that good. Their drummer looks pretty damn good as well come to think of it, but I honestly don’t know a lot about drumming other than when I hear a good one they stand out like a sore thumb.
Which reminds me, I went to a music festival a few years ago and there was an up and coming Scottish band there with a female drummer. She really stood out, almost head an shoulders above the other band members ability wise. I cant for the life of me remember what the bands name was now.
Personally find Cobain underrated as a songwriter and Novoselic even more underrated as a bass player.
Liked Grohl best as a drummer for QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures.
Heretic! Burn him!
OK maybe that’s an over-reaction. But … seriously?
Yeah, sorry, I think it does in totality. Likewise, Bowie covered Scott Walkers Nite Flights, and that gets nowhere near Scotts original. But then Bowie covered Nina Simone’s Wild is the Wind and he now completely owns that. Bauhaus had a run at Eno’s epic proto-punk masterpiece Third Uncle and failed miserably. So it is.
Loved that. I suppose it’s inappropriate to say that my love of that song comes from having bought Gary Glitter’s first album way back when, i.e. way back when he was not, in the public eye, what he is now.
Anyway, this is what I’ve been listening to …
Think I would like the first one played at my funeral. Love the second one for it’s offbeat boy-meets -girl theme.
An impressive display there. But you’re still wrong. The only cover of a Bowie song that surpasses the original has to be All The Young Dudes. But you’re dead right about Wild is the Wind. Owned.
Ha, we can agree to differ. I never knew Bowie did anything more than write All the Young Dudes. I just find Nirvana’s version a little more lively and dynamic and its probably sensationalised by the occasion. Hey even Bowie instructed, talent borrows genius steals. Im nicking The Motel from 1. Outside then…
No problem.
I just hope the new President Joe doesn’t turn out to be the one who’s responsible for the savoiur machine.
I adore Sonic Youth, particularly Daydream Nation, maybe Sister too. Think Goo has its moments, but Dirty is overrated. Hope you like this one. I feel Thurston and Lee play far better when Kim has the mic.
Next up on my YT favorites list is this, which is also on Gary Glitters’ first album.
Although not by Fred McDowell of course.
