I did not really appreciate Prince when he was alive - but damn he could play guitar. He is up there with some serious musicians and he completely blows them away

Legend. Could literally play everything and was self taught.

This is probably my favourite Prince track.

Because of a great voice and great use of the piano (good arrangements as well).
More focused not needing to up the beat to try and make it interesting.
I’m no big fan but I can hear the attraction on a number of Meat Loafs tracks. I can not understand how anyone can sneer at such a voice but then everyone to there own.

I took sometime to appreciate him as well however once you catch on you realise what a great artist he was.

No arguments here- he was clearly a very talented musician, although some of his lyrics were dubious at best.

He just wasn’t my personal cup of tea. :man_shrugging:

I’ll admit I like both on occasion. Bruce is a songwriter whil Meats best work was in collaboration with Jim Steinman who I hadn’t realised passed away earlier this year. Bat out of hell is one of the biggest selling albums ever.

Sales are not indicative of quality. Mr Loaf is ok, but given the choice I’d rather listen to Bruce.
I realise that’s personal as all music taste is.

Example given.

“I was working part time in a five-and-dime
My boss was Mr. McGee.”

What a guitar player, though.

He was. Worth watching his solo on My Guitar Gently Weeps in concert with Tom Petty (another huge loss), George Harrison and a few others. His Purple Rain solo is another special one. On my list to learn.

One thing that does get me about Prince is the catalogue of songs he wrote for other artists. It’s quite astonishing

100% fair. Springsteen has certain done a lot more, I’ll give him that. I probably prefer him as well to be honest but a bit of Meat every now and then is also ok.

I’d also say Meatloaf is the better vocalist.

Awaits flaming

@Magnus, are you familiar with these folks:

Someone should really tell them to hire better art designer because their album covers frankly suck but their music is a great variation on the stoner/doom theme, really catchy and fresh.

What a smash hit this was in the day… Written by Prince

Sorry, no. I guess I have to check them out, Nikola
Agreed concerning the cover art, haha !

Totally disagree. That cover is class.

I didn’t actually know that until you mentioned it. It’s crazy to think he wrote “Manic Monday” for the Bangles and, as @sandsoftime points out, “Nothing Compares 2 U.” I mentioned the “Raspberry Beret” Lyric just to be cheeky. The guy was a huge talent and another one lost far too young to drugs. Still, I almost never listen to his music, which is a little weird, maybe. As a young lad, I was in the military. My barracks was opposite the NCO club. One summer I often slept with the window open, and it seemed “When Doves Cry” was always blaring from that club. How I loathed that song!

I listened to a few radio shows about Prince around the time of his death,
and they spoke of how he would get musicians together to play in his recording studios,
and just jam together. into the early hours.

when they where done, he would delete any recordings to the bemusement of the other musicians, who thought the stuff was great…

Staying with the theme of American solo male singers - this guy is very under-rated.

You all may not know, not only am I great in art, I am also great in music. In fact I am a talented multi disciplinary genius.

Not a big fan of The Boss. No question he has some top songs but just not for me.
