The Ottawa rumour is that the Aussies had our backs. With China being enemy #1, their intel is extremely valuable.
Not sure the actual reasoning, however from my POV they should do this solely for the scandal of foreign interference in elections where mp’s (members of parliament) have apparently been compromised. The mp’s apparently come from all parties, however we do not know (to my knowledge) who these individuals are as this information is being kept from the public, so I am supposed to vote without this information. Annoys the fuck out of me. And if this has been revealed then I’m ultra annoyed with the media as this should be in the front page of the news every day.
Other than that, Trudeau’s liberal party have been mired in several controversies that have been essentially brushed under the carpet due to their position of strength in Canadian politics. Makes Trump look like an amateur.
Yeah, I understand the complications here (and Poilievre’s refusal to get a security clearance so he can continue to throw speculative hand grenades is problematic), but this is a bigger deal than most voters understand. India has been screwing around though largely around the South Asian community, and China has been obviously interfering in some races. Names really should be named.
The Liberals just had to tiptoe around this with the exclusion of Ruby Dhalla. There were sufficient other problems with her campaign funding to create the ‘carpet’ you refer to, but there was a strong suspicion that some of the funds illegally channeled to her campaign came from Indian government sources (directly or indirectly).
I was under the impression (That Poilievre gave) is that if he was granted clearance, he still could not legally release information on and/or legally “fire” any member’s from his party that are involved. I understand about the innocent until proven guilty however this directly effects my vote, so I would want to know and I would want something to be done about it. I’m not willing to wait for years untill this is satisfied in a court of law. In contrast, in the USA, Senator Menendez was charged with bribery, and constituents were able to make their own mind up before the courts (Dems threw him out anyway). IMO this is how it should be done here, for the sake of transparency.
I believe Singh from the NDP has accepted clearance, and yet nothing has happened from the NDP pov, so essentially he has information that he can not act upon, so imo useless. By my calculations, he still propped up the Liberal Government for months, after granted clearance. So either the charges are not that serious (Seriously doubt that’s the case), or getting clearance meant nothing. I understand that he wanted to prop the Liberals up so that he could get some proposals through parliament, yet I don’t see that as more important that the integrity of the elections.
I’m not well versed on the details on what Poilievre’s power would be if he accepted clearance, so would accept some education on this. I agree that it works well for him from a speculation pov, however that would have not have been able to be used as a strategy if he had power to act on the information from the security clearance. Its such a clusterfuck.
This is very amusing. Trump’s mindless and 100 percent baseless, agression , has increased popularity of several incumbent parties and regimes now.
The fact that Trudeau is exiting the scene makes it less of an incumbent issue, and more that the Conservative leader has spent until about six weeks ago being a Trump mini-me. He cannot even attack Trump without reminding people of Trump (‘Canada First’? WTF is that?)
That pollster had the Cons up 13 points on February 1. The multi-poll moving average model still has them winning a majority government, but it is now quite close, where it was predicting a wipeout for the Liberals before Trudeau stepped down.
That’s the one, presume it is still happening on the Trans Canada line.
No, I think the line you are thinking of is further north for most of the route in Ontario, as it was built to connect the West to Ontario and Quebec by passing north of the Great Lakes. This one under discussion would connect Toronto and Montreal (and on to Quebec City) along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence.
Funny, I’m in as long as “Gay North Dakota” has Canada style medical coverage.
I have a lot of thoughts about this, being a Canadian living in the US
Carney has been getting a free pass from the media and the Liberal, erm “debates.”
But he’s a technocrat and a shitty politician. He sounds like the central banker that he is. He’s going to get roasted when this thing gets going for real.

One of the arts of being a good politician is being able to blatantly lie when it sounds like you’re not blatantly lying.
Carney doesn’t appear to have this gift.

The mayor of Lima, Peru, has a message to Canadians: Think twice before making Mark Carney your prime minister.
Mayor Lopez Aliaga says based on Carney’s actions when he was chairman of Brookfield Asset Management, there should be serious questions asked about Carney’s character. In an interview from Lima, Aliaga said Brookfield, chaired by Carney, was “making massive profits off a toxic contract” plagued by bribes.
“Canadians need to know the way Brookfield, under Mr. Mark Carney, operates here. They need to know how they obtain money from the suffering of poor people,” Aliaga said.
The Municipality of Lima is currently suing Brookfield in a New York City court. It’s part of an ongoing legal battle that has been going on for years.
Man, Carney is going to get just slaughtered after the writ drops.

Poilievre’s problem is that he has never actually faced the general electorate to account for years of disqualifying stuff. Advocating that the CPP should invest in crypto because of a Youtube video he saw? But I think the killer is that it is not hard to find images and quotes of him supporting Trump. When a significant number of voters are using a smartphone app to read barcodes to avoid buying American, that is going to be an absolute millstone. You don’t lose 10 points in virtually every poll in a matter of 4 weeks without being on the wrong side of something. I saw an interesting comment from Nik Nanos wondering how lasting that could be with a magnitude that large and fast, Nanos seems to really want to see a couple of more data points to understand what that trend really is.
I expect the effect will be the most ‘presidential’ election we have ever had, very heavy focus on the leaders rather than policy, and likely a very negative campaign. That probably actually plays to PP’s advantage, because attack politics is more or less his forte.
I don’t expect the Brookfield stuff is going to get a great deal of traction. From Carney’s position, I think the more important question right now is his opportunity (or lack thereof) to make gains in Quebec. His performance in the French language debate was so-so, and not just because of linguistic issues. He ended well, but on some of the issues was surprisingly weak. Any road to the PMO has to at the very least hold on to their Quebec seats, and ideally take some away from the Bloc. The Quebec electorate is incredibly volatile right now, much more so than I think anywhere in English Canada, because of the extreme sensitivity around the US. The Quebec Conservatives seem to be on the wrong side of that, but the Liberals need to make sure they aren’t too
