Absolutely the right stuff. A proper hero. The pioneers of flight are all at the top of my list of absolute stars. Happy to say I’ve seen his Bell X1. A very sad day but to put it into a cricketing perspective, a damn good knock sir, well done.
I don’t know the exact history, I’d imagine (given the way they did things) that test pilots had to be fearless daredevils whereas astronauts needed to be very well educated superhumans.
Quick google: Yeager was foremost a fighter pilot and held several squadron and wing commands. … (Yeager himself had only a high school education, so he was not eligible to become an astronaut like those he trained.)
