For me, its not just the football but the experience around it - at least on the tv. I really miss the grainy pictures/ sound quality from back in the 80’s which just helped reinforce the image that the matches where being played somewhere very far.

Somewhat interesting interview with one of the people who first did meaningful work on statistical modeling of football
First half of the interview is more focused on the basics for an American non-football fan demo, but it gets into more interesting territory in the second half. The main point though is she got the idea to pick through the data because she was a Blackpool fan ( 
) and was frustrated at Charlie Adam shooting from distance so often and wanted to demonstrate why it was such a bad approach
