I am surprised that Oliver and the lino is getting such a free pass on this. Yes it was a monumental fuck up by VAR to not go back to call out the second offense. But intertwined with that is that Oliver didnt recognize it either. Surely good refereeing in that situation would be to say something like
“Offside on Haaland…we know its likely very tight, but there is also a subjective offside on Enzo we’ll need to confirm if Haaland is on.”
And when he was told by the officials that check overturned, a ref in control of the process would have responded “what? Haaland and Enzo were both onside? No fucking way.”
But its the nameless guys being demoted and the favourite being protected

Holy shit, you cannot believe how bad this is. After clearance Haaland they go all the way back to the initial goal kick to try to find something to take issue with. why? This is what we were always told they don’t do…use video to try to find pick up something even they missed in real time.
But even after doing that, they STILL missed the guy doing a diving header 6 yards from goal

This seems important as well. The lino is actually calling out Enzo as being offside. Not only do the VAR officially completely ignore that and decide to focus only on Haaland even before they see the footage, the “transcripts” the pgmol release conveniently ignore that

Only today did I finally push myself to watch this. I already knew it was man city benefiting from another weird refereeing mistake so I thought I wouldn’t be too shocked by what the ref had missed. But omg this doesn’t look like a mistake, it looks more like corruption.
Weirdly enough I can recall quite a few moments where bizarre decisions went in citys favour

I noticed the stark contrast of our Carabao cup match against Spurs…it flowed so well!
Yes, I understand why VAR was brought in…because there had been egregious errors in the past.
But the system is flawed, and by the system I mean the human beings that run it.
It’s gotten so bad that I’m leaning towards the combination of on field idiots and VAR idiots is worse than just on-field idiots.
Maybe VAR can work with AI but turkeys don’t vote for Christmas so I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
Maybe only automated offside…but then again they fucked up an offside call so royally that everyone is on their case.
Yeah, AI is the way to go.

The process is an absurd one. Almost all of the issues come from how convoluted it is. In the interest of standardization it prevents them things that should be corrected, creating the ridiculous “it is unanimously agreed the ref made a mistake in giving a penalty but VAR was right to not overturn it” situations, and so focuses their attention on issues the game wasn’t asking to be corrected. And even with all that, they are still liable to make a monumental fuck up.
This cannot work unless they massively simplify it. Almost all of the issues are caused by the decision to make VAR a second pair of eyes, but one we don’t want overruling the on pitch ref. The process they have been required to put in place to allow for that is why we get controversy of when VAR gets in involved and when it doesnt, and why it is so often not allowed by process to achieve the best outcome. Just fuck the VAR off completely, and replace it with a tech who simply shows the footage to the ref for a second look whenever requested by the manager (obviously with limits).

And of course I’m sure there was the chance where var would come up with arms extending in opposite directions well away from the body was somehow a “natural” position.
Yes, there needs to be challenges from the benches. One per half. If you get a ruling in your favour, then your challenge is still alive. Challenge can be made over anything including VAR decisions. Ref makes the final decision after screen review which is broadcast and verbal explanation given the the crowd.
For me, VAR and other tech gets most things right and it’s valuable for offsides and handballs (usually).The problem is that the ones it gets wrong become huge issues because fans rightly expect refs to get things right when they get the chance to correct themselves. So, it’s worth keeping VAR considering AI will inevitably creep further into reffing and will reduce errors as the human element (almost wrote idiot element) is gradually reduced.

Rice and Anderson, England poster boys who can do what they like at the moment.
Rice should have been sent off on Saturday, despite protestation in the PL thread. That, added to his spat with Rogers in the Chelsea match is highlighting a snide streak in Rice. My argument is that no Liverpool player gets that latitude.
Andersons hand ball effects the result of the match. Bit like Odegaard vs LFC a few seasons back. But as you said, its City and you can suspect the corrupt nature of people where big money is involved.
The same excuses will be made, all the “it evens out” or “other supporters think their club is hard done by”…usual stuff.
But no cogent argument as to why these two incidents went under punished.
