The thinking is that Putin wants the Europeans to force the Ukrainians to the negotiation table, and now. But the pressure is not that intense on Europe at the moment. Europeans wonât really feel winter pressure for at least 75 days or so when you factor in storage. By sabotaging the pipelines, Russia is tying their own hands - they wonât be able to turn the gas back on by opening up some valves, they will need to repair the lines, which will likely take at least a month.
A pig is a device/vessel that moves inside a gas pipeline. That would be a far easier way of doing it than from outside. Presumably robotic because most pigs move with the force of the pressurized line.
