The Russian Invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

Fascinating thread on how the rigidity of the US Army’s peacetime training is interacting with Ukrainian experience. The US may have at least as much to learn about warfare in the era of drones and cellphones as the Russians

India has traditionally been friendly with the Soviet Union. The relationship with India with the west is basically that of a means to counter China. India’s not in any particular illusions that there are other benefits to that relationship.

You say neutral broker. I say following self interests without allying to a particular groups.

As far as double games etc are concerned, I would be looking more at turkey with Erdogan.

Which is constantly looked and talked about by absolutely everyone, viewed as almost a Trojan Horse, and you therefore don’t have a good point.
His point is perhaps along the lines that there is a growing realisation that India is a semi-hostile state, while it is often portrayed and more problematically, still treated a friendly state, while it in reality even after the invasion of Ukraine, sides with Russia and that this should be considered more in depth regarding long term consequences for relationship with India etc.

Budanov said today that they have sources within Putin’s circle. I doubt they do, I think it is more psyops to generate paranoia tbh. But maybe they do, who knows.

I understand that. It’s just that states acting on their self interest isn’t unheard of. For example , the relationship with Russia. What pray tell is India supposed to do to find sources of Oil and Gas ? And who’s buying the same russian Oil refined by India again ?

India has never attacked another country by starting a war. Neither has the country posed a threat to regional and national peace by warmongering. If the intent is that India is realized as a semi-hostile state just because they don’t follow the status quo , then so be it.

Some confusion if this is completely true at this point in time (but they will do it I am sure, and it will be funny when they do it):

It’s probably a bit more about being a large and important economy, with some geopolitical weight, that helps the enemy, so very different from unfortunate Madagaskar embracing Russia (no one wants to punish Madagaskar). What you mean about Status Quo is also a bit unclear here. We are talking about an old fashioned imperial war of conquest, with aditional genocial parts, like attempts of annihilation of culture; not “just a war”. It is the greatest crime in the UN charter Russia is comitting here and you talk as if it is “just a war”. It is not and it is not seen as such, and reactions to abetting Russia far, far more hostile than if it had been “just a war”.

I wouldn’t go as far as ‘semi-hostile’. Just not sharing any real interests, despite formally similar systems of government that idealists would believe create common ground.

I thought this essay last year was a fairly solid treatment of the Indian position

I am pretty sure I read this article long ago (almost a year?). Do you know when it was released ? I can’t find a date.
It is a very solid article and well worth a read for everyone.

India is becoming China mk2.

Ugh, just noticed that the cat had just killed a mouse today and not eaten it. She usually eats them, but now I almost stepped on a small bloody corpse with a head missing.

Anyway, interesting discussion here:

Nevermind , August 2022. I was just blind. Sorry. But yes, this explains why I had read it before.

Because it is a bit awkward due to ICC warrant on Putin that SA have signed. Nothing more, nothing less (of course they won’t arrest him if he comes, like some delusional people on twitter thinks)
