The Steven Gerrard Thread

7 - disappointed in myself with that.

10/10.

The most tricky question was where does he rank as our best ever goalscorer.

Team of the year question was a tricky one for me, the rest were easy. Damn, this stuff only reminds me just how much I miss him.

That’s the one I got wrong (was 1 out).

8/10

Got ToTY and number of trophies wrong

Decent quotes from Stevie and Jurgen ahead of the Villa game. Stevie, lots of friends here, will be lovely to go back, local boy, but will be very happy to be on the bus back to Birmingham with the three points.

Jurgen experience of going back to Mainz, but now with Dortmund, and celebrating like crazy. Says there will be handshake before. Handshake after. Then both teams doing their utmost to win in between. As it should be.

One strange quote from Jurgen in that he says Stevie will return as manager one day. It seemed unequivocal. I know there won’t be an arrangement, but it could almost be interpreted as that. Better for Jurgen to simply say Stevie did a great job at Rangers, he has started very well at Villa. If he keeps going like this there won’t be a team in the world who doesn’t want him.

Heard Stevie on the radio earlier…

He is pure class.

Fuck I hope he is good enough to manage us one day.

In terms of goals from outside the box, he’s probably above even Rushie.

Well that was fucking tense as fuck! He’s got them set up well! Still fancy them picking up a surprise European spot!

He did what he needed to do. Set them up tough to break down. Compete for everything. To the degree that goes beyond the rules, you need the man with the whistle to do his job and Atwell did not have a good game.

So it was close. We got a goal. Wasted some chances. Villa showed their quality a bit more when they were chasing the draw, as they put a couple of good moves together.

Stevie lost, but he emerges with no damage at all to his credit.

We get the three points and move on.

You spelt “absolutely fucking abysmally shocking” wrong!

True, you describe it a lot better.

I’m embarrassed to say I called him Twatwell in more than one occasion, watching at home.

Better than we called him in the ground! Should have had at least one penalty in the first half from where I was. If not 2. Haven’t seen replays though but was shocked nothing came from VAR. Then a promising counter attack pulled back for a foul to us on Thiago, ball was about to get to Salah who had half the pitch to run into. And their keeper got let off so many times for time wasting could have had two yellow cards (although he probably would have stopped it after one). So many others too many to remember. Completely disrupted the game for us.

Just saw Stevie post match interview and I hate the fact that he is taking about Liverpool as the opponent.

Yuck

I hope now that the Villa game is out of the way the talk about Gerrard and the Liverpool job dies down a bit. The media are talking about Gerrard becoming Liverpool manager as if it’s a job that’s just there to be given rather than earned. It’s one of the biggest jobs in sport and only the very best should be anywhere near it. I wouldn’t want Klopp to think we’re all itching for Stevie to take over. If he left in 20 years time it would be too soon for me.

I think Klopp is smart enough to understand the noise.

Before Jurgen landed we were desperate for a manager that could lead us back to glory…
Desperate enough to give anyone with a link to what we at LFC are all about…
Now that we have dined at the top table and tasted the riches of CL and Premier League in quick succession, not sure sentimentality will actually come into it anymore when Jurgen walks away… He has spoilt us with the scintillating games and style of football… in fact, the whole way he conducts himself and the prestige he has brought back to being a fan of LFC… What a void he will leave eh.
If, and I personally think it is a big if… Stevie comes back, it won’t be directly after JK, because that is a job for some sacrificial lamb stop-gap type… After that who knows.!
Was glad to see the back of Souness when he couldn’t get it right because as a manager, the guy never suited the role… Don’t want Stevie G to suffer the same fate…

100% that Gerrard has to earn the right to be here one day as manager.

Just on the Souness thing, I remember feeling in a similar way but having heard him speak about it I actually have a lot of sympathy.

He was trying to move the club on but the club itself and a lot of the players there at the time weren’t ready for that. He was also tasked with sorting out all the players contracts etc.

We are not going to write off even the potential idea that he might merit a chance here because of how Villa played on Saturday? They actually did alright, looking at the context of time, him having probably a dozen training sessions.

He’s on a good path so far, nothing much more to say other than that.

Stevie need 2-3 years of constantly improving Villa before he can even be considered a candidate to take over from Klopp.

How he does in the transfer market, how Villa play, can he get them into Europe etc etc.
