The Steven Gerrard Thread

Gerrard isn’t our greatest ever player. End of.

I think he said in the conversation for greatest player. Not the same as saying he is.

Personally, I struggle to see past Neil Ruddock.

[Because he’s so fat :joy:]

I think when you put them both together - leaving the Liverpool coaching setup very early and leaving Rangers rather than consolidating - Gerrard’s problem is he was in too much of a hurry and hadn’t accrued the experience that could have helped in at Villa. Staying longer at either position would have helped. Apparently he wasn’t a deep thinker about the game as a player (cf. Alonso or the Lego man) so he probably needed a longer apprenticeship before the PL.

You may be right, and he might have been better advised to wait, but he took what was on offer and backed himself to succeed.

From Stevie’s perspective maybe Celtic would strike back and Rangers slip, and then a Prem job as attractive as Villa might not have come around?

Whatever his thought process, he took it when it was on offer.

I don’t mind that. He’s a young man, and if he wants to continue his management career after Villa, the experience will have taught him a lot.

There is/was a higher expectation on him. Whether its merited ir not, England players like Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard are flavours of the month and then drop off a bit.
The same level of expectation was not applied to Potter for example.

Big difference with Potter is the experience he’s gathered and implementing his style of play at Brighton very quickly and efficiently. He’s a respected coach whereas Gerrard and Lampard have still a lot to prove imo.

For a lot of the newer generation of fans, he is.

Will be interesting to see how Beale fares now he’s taking over at Wolves. They aren’t in that much of a dissimilar position than Villa were when Gerrard took over there. Shame the two aren’t likely to be in direct competition for any length of time.

I agree, my point though is in regard to expectation.
Potter could fail and nobody would really notice.
Everyone is watchinghigh profile ex players who are inevitably doomed with faint praise at the outset, then pilloried fir not fetting immediate success…

So happy for Sadio with his award and he should have won the Ballon d’or, (with my red tinted glasses on).

Sad to hear Gerarrd has gone. He should have stayed at LFC for at least 3 years with under18s, then, stayed at Rangers 4-5 years and then go to a Championsship club for a few years and then go for a EPL club. He was trying to rise up as a manager too soon.
He has a looong way to go, if he wants to manage LFC. Personally, i think Xabi will get there before him.

I agree, but there will be some out there who think so, no doubt.

Anyways…this is sad, but Stevie’s a big boy and knew what the pond was like when he jumped in.

Potter had the benefit of working with an exceptionally well ran club in Brighton, their scouting set up is well established and worked in complete tandem with the manager. Very similar to Liverpool. He’s clearly a good manager as well.

Villa is a cesspit lead by Purslow and billionaire owners who have zero patiance but love to interfere.

Has Gerrard done this?

“As a young coach, Potter studied the training methods of Roberto Martínez at Swansea and became inspired by his possession-based approach, along with the “holistic” training principles he observed during his travels to Spain. Potter also cites the philosophy of Pep Guardiola and Raymond Verheijen’s periodisation model among his influences”

Liverpool → Rangers → Villa is a very closed view of football.

Gerrard should take some time to travel and see different leagues, cultures and styles.

Sounds very similar to:

“Rodgers, by then, had also sought to further his knowledge on the continent, and to satisfy his interest in the methods of some of Europe’s best-run clubs. In addition to learning what he could of Barcelona and the enduring influence of Johan Cruyff, he also admired the philosophies of some of Spain’s other leading teams, and of Ajax.”

And in the end doesn’t mean shit after failing at Liverpool, and now overseeing the relegation of former Premier League champions Leicester.

Meanwhile best manager in the world Jurgen Klopp said he learned everything as a coach from Mainz manager Wolfgang Frank and studying Arrigo Sacchi.

I don’t know who Gerrard has studied, but has played under Houllier, Benitez, as well as a long list of varying England managers. I’m sure he’s picked a thing or two up along the way.

One of the main criticism directed at Gerrard is his lack of management skills.

So nothing major then.
