The Steven Gerrard Thread

No, the discussion was about one aspect of ability (press proof, coming out of pressure with possession) which prime Gini might have been better than prime Stevie. Although pressing and counter pressing wasn’t nearly as big of a thing during Stevie’s pomp so I bet he would have adapted.

There is no comparison. Stevie was galaxies better than Gini

Bruyne is the closest to him in terms of style. One had better attributes than the other and vice versa.

He would’ve adapted like duck to water. Style, position, role, everything. Ideal to be the main midfield guy in our 4-3-3, support the attack, but also defend/press like hell.

My god I can just picture Stevie triggering the press, forcing possession to be conceded (he’d steamroller over the opposition) and blasting in goals with that cannon of a right foot!

He is, he’s got a pretty decent shot but not as spectacularly powerful as Stevie’s, also a bit slower than Stevie and not nearly as good of a 1-1 defender as Stevie was, and can’t touch him in tackling prowess.

Bellingham might end up being closer. He also doesn’t have as powerful a shot

He played most of his liverpool career under 2 managers whose tactical approach was a little at odds with what Stevie did best. Both then had to find a role for him in that set up and in some ways accommodate him. He was too good to not do that, but you had the feeling that if they were building their side from the start it probably wouldnt have included him. Especially Rafa. In contrast, Stevie was born to play in Klopp’s midfield. It would have accentuated all of his strengths and mitigated some of what might have been seen as weakness in the tactically reserved approaches of Rafa and Houllier.

I only got to see him once, made the journey to Seattle to see Gerrard and Robbie Keane play there. men amongst boys even at their age. I even saw a VIP pitchside table with “This Is Anfield” marked on it, couple guys sitting there I didn’t recognize. was quite an experience. there were thousands of Gerrard LFC jerseys in the crowd.

Don’t think I can agree with this at all. Well the bit about Houllier n Rafa building a side and not including Stevie.

Yeah, it’s a big shout, but especially with Rafa it seems reasonable.

Did you see that Valencia side he brought to Anfield in the CL, I think in 02? We mostly remember that year for the capitulation against Basel, but I remember it for the game before where Rafa’s Valencia team played us off the park at Anfield to a level few alive would have ever seen before. It made the feeling of disappointment at dropping into the UEFA cup hurt less because Valencia had already shown us we didnt belong at the CL level if that was what top level football was. It was a win earned through the implementation of an incredibly well drilled midfield who tactically and technically didnt put a foot wrong all night. This was what Rafa wanted out of his football and it never felt like he could achieve anything close to it with Stevie in midfield. While he found a way to make effective use out of what he inherited in Gerrard, it was rarely in a central midfield role. And certainly never without a minder and often 2. I mean, Rafa is the guy who subbed off a peak, fit Gerrard in a league derby for a young untested Brazilian to help retain better control of the game in which we were failing to take advantage of Everton being down to 10 men.

That game was cited at the time of Rafa’s appointment as one of the main reasons why he got the job.

It was one of the most beautifully measured performances I’ve ever seen. We were not a great side at that point, but we were a difficult side to play against and certainly a difficult side to look good against. They just did pretty much whatever they wanted to do that night. It was majestic.

I’ve never seen us so outplayed before and after that game. They were fantastic.
Rafa got the best out of Stevie, putting him off the right, then behind Torres.
Regards Everton, I think Stevie was too pumped up to make the right decisions in that game.

Aimar was such a good player too.

I remember that Valencia side that Rafa put together. So so good. Knocked the usual top two off their perch in Spain too, although unfortunately if you are so financially outmatched, it doesn’t last.

Lighter shade of hair, but quite a splitting image.

Presume that’s the kids bedroom? That’s okay I suppose but not sure about the decor for a child and really not a fan of king size beds for little kids. Looks like more like a LFC themed hotel really

Steven Gerrard is the only player to score in The FA Cup final, The League Cup final, UEFA Cup final and The Champions League final.

He and Matty Cash were close I see

Why would Gerrard want that job?
