The Steven Gerrard Thread

What should he do after getting the sack from a lower midtable PL team?

Championship? Going back to Scotland?

That is more weird from Poland’s point of view to be honest.

I remember watching it and thinking Wow, what a team! It was impressive. :+1:

The difficulty now is where next for Stevie? He started out with some youth coaching, then flew the nest and got the job at Rangers. It all galvanized there and they were hungry to beat Celtic. So far so good.

At that point it is tough to know what to do. Stay in Scotland, knowing it will never be better, and all you can do is maintain, or slip back to second?

So Villa took him on, and he went there. I’ve no problem with it, as he backed himself to go there and do well.

At first it was up and down, but you got the sense that he was assessing the squad and working out who would be with him for the long haul. The problem was that as more time elapsed, it was hard to see a clear identity or pattern of play emerging. And perhaps worse than that, it looked like (albeit from afar) the players were not playing for him. Or at least, not giving their all.

Results were not great and Stevie was sacked. That’s football.

On the Villa end they quickly brought in an experienced and accomplished manager in Emery, who already looks to be getting a bit more out of it, and he has barely got going.

So what now for Stevie?

Youth coaching? Championship club? Would he take that sort of thing on having tasted being the boss at Rangers and Villa? Maybe. He doesn’t need the money, and it is up to him whether he wants to work in that capacity in the game or not.

In a way it’s a shame, because something that could have been really good - Stevie’s managerial career, might possibly have been nipped in the bud.

Being a star player going into management is a double edged sword. It might land you a better job initially, and you might find yourself managing in the Premier League before you have grown as a manager, but if you don’t do well enough, there’s almost an overreaction the other way, and Stevie might now experience that.

If he is serious about becoming a good manager… Is he prepared to give every ounce of commitment needed to get a handle on the job… Lifestyle etc
If he is… Maybe the best club to look for is a sleeping giant in the lower leagues… somewhere with a large fanbase that are desperate for a sniff of success… Sunderland… or Barnsley… A fanbase that would grow to appreciate him if he proved to be any good

Well, it seems like he’s found a new job promoting the sustainability of a Korean car manufacturer.

Should become a pundit as the entire world clamors for that Gerrard/Carragher all Scouser commentary team. Would be a hoot listening to those two argue in the studio.

If he wants to manage, he’ll find a job. Though it may mean dropping down a league or two.

Ince has never been particularly impressive as a manager, yet here he is managing a mid-table Championship side with an outside chance of the playoffs.

Then if he’s good enough there, he can work his way up again.

Put him above the likes of Riley & Webb at the PGMOL, teach some of these refs how to use a bit of common sense…if he really wants to do us all a favour & make a change.

He would need to go to the Championship. Thing with Brendan Rodgers is he did do well with Swansea before us and Celtic.

Gerrard doesn’t have that at all. He would have been better setting his sights down there unless he feels if he does well in Poland then it’s the national job at England.

Some managers suit international more. It’s not the worst national job he could take.

He might fancy getting a game for us at the moment.

Mark Noble on the Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes debate:

“It’s got to be Stevie. I think he’s got everything, I don’t think there’s a weakness there at all. Total player.”

When questioned if he’d pick another midfielder in the world ahead of Stevie:

“No.”

Just watching Stevie’s 100 PL club goals. Really feel for him that he got cheated out of the PL trophy

Instead of going to rangers crap league he should have taken a job in the championship like Kompany. I said this at the time but some on here strongly disagreed with me.

Stevie might have been better served staying in the shadows under Jurgen at Anfield… Patience is one of the best virtues we can practice

No he needs to go and learn elsewhere. Our fickle fans would want klopp sacked and Stevie in.

Maybe best to judge Kompany after he actually manages in the PL and then make a more accurate comparison.

Aye, because Lampard was such a success.

He deserves credit for what he has already done with Burnley, changed their style of play and got them promoted and only two losses in the league this season.

Absolutely. And Gerrard did a fantastic job at rangers domestically and also pretty well in Europe.

I never liked Stevie’s attitude as manager when things were going wrong. Always somebody else’s fault. Don’t know what Kompany is like in that regard, though the fact they haven’t lost many means not many probably know. We’ll find out next season though.
