Not sure. Out drinking with them plenty, over at each others houses, friends with their cousins etc. obviously the intro was through the daughter but seems to be definitely a two way relationship.
It’s not stevens fault but it’s disgraceful, lost so many loved ones to that Byrne family over the years and for him to be mates with them is embarrassing and shameful.
While I try to not just make a broad statement about all Saudi clubs or that everyone associated with them are bad people, but Gerrard, of all people, should probably know the sentiments of a large majority of Liverpool fans of the middle eastern owned football clubs? I personally will not say that he should not have taken the job but if this becomes official, would his legendary status be affected in any way?
not his playing career…but its not great either…dissapointed would be a way to put it… as much as i love the football he put out over the years, this is something he could have left alone.
im also dissappointed in him on a different level, as hes just entering a side show, if he does decide the best football position for him is in Saudi Arabia, i doubt he’d get the LFC position in the future…they are only hiring him for the novelty factor and he cant be going there for any football related reasons.
so its a double whammy really.
i know Wenger took the managerial route through Japan, but this is different, this is just purely a branding exercise.
The but def gets added now. Should have stayed home, probably started managing the England u19, u21 instead of getting the SA job if he still felt the urge to manage… Also get in some work done in Liverpool academy etc.
To say people are disappointed in this would be an understatement.
Gerrard could stop hanging out with the gang members. I get him being friendly with his daughter’s boyfriend. He might be a nice kid. But why does that have to involve having meetings with the kid’s family ?
One thing I do know about gangs is that once you’re involved with them, not easy to leave. I suspect Gerrard didn’t wake up one day and decide to go say hello for the fun of it. Wasn’t he threatened by a gang when he was going to leave years ago? Could all date back to that.
early in his career I think he used to hang out with some questionable people then didn’t he. I vaguely remember the club having to get involved and help him on that.
Never in a million years, of course he’ll never have any of the fans’ blessing but he’ll have his reasons (99% it’ll be for the money) but I’m not gonna hold that against him…he’s a free agent, he’s his own man wise enough now to make his own choices in life…life is all about living and learning at the end of it, if he regrets it later down the line that’s fine…if not that’s fine too.
Yeah, my thought was that he is going for when he can earn a good salary, rather than moving his managerial career past the setback at Villa. I suppose he can apply any lessons he may have learned just about anywhere, but you wonder about his next job.
The Wenger comparison bears thinking about, but Japan at the time was reforming its league with a clear eye toward the 2002 World Cup. It is not clear that the Saudi project is that kind of initiative, or just throwing money around to buy profile. Wenger circa 1994 was already seen as one of the thinkers of the game, Gerrard 2023 is nothing like that.
He’ll need a few billion more for transfers! Pointless him spending all his money on buying the club, then offering a 40 year old Hendo another contract extension.
I love Stevie to bits. Still miss him as a player.
But unless some massive transformation happens I don’t want him anywhere near the LFC hot seat. The boot room days are well and truly gone and we need the right candidate at the helm, especially if we have to contend with the likes of City and Newcastle
