The Steven Gerrard Thread

I think he’ll manage Everton eventually.

If he has an ounce of sense he’ll notice how they treated Rafa and give that notion a wide berth

:+1:

Obviously yes.

How dare you dis Phil Collins like that

Peak Gerrard is up there with the best Liverpool players of all time. He’s not there yet.

I’ve followed gerrard’s entire career. Also , there needs to be a case of better tactics , better fitness training etc. It’s really not unrealistic.

Like i said , it’s going to be an unpopular argument. But a footballer in the 2000’s is always going to be less than a footballer in the 2010’s or the 2020’s.

Dominik at his age right now is on par or better than Stevie when he was at his peak… and that takes into concern that he’s still to reach the peak.

I’ll stand by that.

Call it recency bias or whatever.

FFS, the guy has 6 games under his belt at LFC and we’re doing Gerrard comparisons?

I like that you’re being so positive about Szoboszlai, who is undoubtedly a very talented player, but to claim he’s at or better than peak Gerrard should see you institutionalized!

Well. It’s not about Dom as such. The standards of fitness , better knowledge etc have increased as well.

I’ll say that a messi is a better footballer than maradona , it’s not the same as cricket where people can say Bradman is the be all and end all.

Tag this under recency bias or whatever. But with the increased fitness standards etc , there’s every likelihood that a modern day footballer is better than the guys a generation before.

Might require a seperate thread.

Comparisons like that never helped anyone in the history of this sport.

Let Stevie be Stevie and let’s see how far Dom can go.

by that you’re admitting that a modern day footballer by nature is more fitter etc etc , than someone who’s a 2000’s.

thanks for proving my point.

What might be more relevant, in that case, is how much better is Dom compared to his contemporaries.

Because peak Gerrard was significantly better than his contemporaries. His physical talents and skill set were unique and probably still are.

Bellingham can probably do everything Dominic does, just a bit better. Except maybe in the stamina and long range shooting departments.

Gerrard had no such direct rival. Some midfielders could score more regularly (although I’d suggest had Gerrard been used purely offensively earlier in his career he could have bettered throws numbers significantly), and some defended better (Gerrard could have been better defensively with more focused coaching).

But nobody could match his entire package. Little wonder Zidane himself lauded him.

again. Requires a seperate thread.

Stevie was immense in terms of his influence. No one is denying that. He was probably ahead of his time as well in terms of skillset and verstatility.

But as a footballer , is Dominik at 22-23 ahead of peak Stevie at 27 ? That’s not a diss on Stevie , It’s just an indication on how far the game has grown. There’s been better training practices , better fitness markers etc. The game as such has become faster.

Are people going to raise a fuss when I’d say that TAA is a much better wingback than Cafu ?

Nope. Cafu is 53 :joy:

It’s an old pub debate to compare players across different eras.

  1. It is a given that training, diet, coaching and preparation continue to improve, along with the conditions under which people at the top end ply their trade. Equipment is better, pitches are better, etc.

  2. We can only truly compare people with others of the same generation. We see how they fare in relation to the rest.

But obviously the temptation exists to compare people from different eras. I half suspect that an academy graduate would be better than Billy Liddell, in absolute terms, if you could transport him to 80 years ago. But Liddell was an icon compared to his peers, while an academy graduate might only be a low to middling pro in the football pyramid of today.
