The TV Thread redux (Part 2)

I cancelled Netflix at the start of the year, I couldn’t justify the almost quarterly price increases for a service sorely lacking in top content any more. I don’t miss it at all.

I’ll occasionally sign up for Apple TV when they have a few decent things, like Slow Horses, on the go, but other than that my only streaming vice is Spotify, and they’re pushing it with their £12.99 a month!

But that’s what she wants!

There’s a K-Drama on Disney+ (I think), it’s called “Light Shop”. It’s worth taking a look.

I watch lots of SK dramas… I find some of them are brilliant…
After months since watching, the only one that I still can’t decide about as to whether it was absolutely ‘unnervingly’ brilliant, or absolutely rubbish because it was so overly tense and sinister… was a series called Mouse.

From Reddit:
" Mouse (2021) is widely considered an excellent psychological crime thriller, but it is also highly polarizing. It holds a strong 8.6/10 rating on IMDb and is frequently recommended alongside top-tier K-drama thrillers like Signal, Beyond Evil, and Flower of Evil."

TBH, K-Drama has gone through a really meh period (IMHO) in the past 2-3 years.

Light Shop and Lovely Runner are the two exceptions in 2024.

2023 has several good shows that I watched and enjoyed: The Glory (Part 2 (Part 1 was from 2022), Twinkling Watermelon, Daily Dose of Sunshine, Doctor Romantic S3 (I much preferred S1 & S2), LTNS (Long Time No Sex), Moving.

2022 was another banner year for K-Drama: The Glory Part 1, Recipe for Farewell, Tracer Part 1 & 2, My Liberation Notes, Twenty Five Twenty One, Gaus Electronics, just to name a few.

I have found Slow Horses S6 a bit disappointing so far. I am on E4. A bit of a contrived plot and Lamb, while still brilliant, is becoming a caracature of himself.

Interesting. I think this is as good as its ever been. Slow Horses is never not good, but S4 and 5 I think fell into a bit of what felt like auto pilot, but this feels fresher.

The Gentlemen - Bollocks. I’m done with Guy Ritchie.

Beef season 2 isn’t bad though.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the first 3 episodes of season 6 and am really keen to see where this one goes.

Recently got a 3 month Apple TV trial via a hardware purchase and started Slow Horses last night. Binged the first four episodes back to back, which is pretty rare for me these days. Very good.

Apple TV in general seems to have improved quite a bit in terms of breadth of content since I last had it too - which is nice.

Ann Droid. BBC, Brilliant can’t wait for series 2.

It was a wonderful mix of humour and pathos. Sue Johnson was brilliant. My mother is a few years older and completely mistrusting of technology and it could have been her. Brilliantly observed.

Yeah it captures the heart, I laughed from the bottom of my pit so many times. Probably Sue’s best role for quite some time although i did enjoy cockfields (i think it is called)

So, over a period of time, with my french mate, I ve rewatched all of the not going out series on iplayer. They’ve just released in the last fortnight a new series and a documentary. We were watching the documentary, i hear “OMG of course!” , perplexed , i ask him “what?” “what?” ,… turns out we’d watched over 100 episodes and he’d never understood the title of the show. He’d spent the entire time thinking it meant they were not going outside and couldnt understand why there are scenes were they are outside

I am half way through the new Zoe Kazan East of Eden adaptation for Netflix and I think it’s fantastic. Big caveat is I have never read the book. I understand it is a considered an unorthodox adaptation in that it centers the female character, played in this by Florence Pugh, far more than the book does and people have reacted negatively to that. But isn’t the value of an adaptation?

Just finished watching The Mayor of Kingstown Episode 5 of Season 1 on Netflix… Must say it has caught my attention so far and if it can continually grow as the story, (The Wire vibe) and cast come together, then I remain hopeful for the rest of it. Apparently there are 5 seasons to date…

“A crime drama about an important contemporary issue, America’s prison system, “Mayor of Kingstown” follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry; the family of power brokers between police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians tackle themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality; the crime thriller series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.”

What the Show Is About

  • The Premise: Created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, the series follows the McLusky family—led by Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner)—who act as power brokers and “fixers” in Kingstown, Michigan, a town where the primary industry is federal, state, and local prisons.

  • The Tone: It is a dark, brutal, and fast-paced look at systemic corruption, prison politics, gangs, and law enforcement.

Why You Should Watch It

  • Jeremy Renner’s Performance: Renner anchors the entire series with a commanding, intense lead performance as Mike McLusky.

  • High Tension & Binge-Worthy Pace: Viewers and critics often note that once the dense world-building of the first few episodes clicks, the narrative moves at a relentless, addictive pace.

  • Expanding Seasons: The show spans multiple seasons and maintains strong fan engagement, with audiences praising its raw action and complex underworld dynamics.

The Drawbacks to Keep in Mind

  • Very Dark and Violent: The series deals heavily with abuse, systemic racism, prison violence, and bleak moral grey areas. It is not a light or comforting watch.

  • Mixed Initial Reviews: Critics were somewhat split early on (with a lower critic score on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic), though audience reception is notably higher (sitting around an 84% audience score).

  • Slow Start: Some viewers find the first couple of episodes dense or difficult to track as it drops you straight into a complex web of rival factions and institutional jargon.

Nice. Looking for something. I find my tolerance low these days.

Very sad to see… This is a guy who looks like he needs some help getting back to where he once was… Will leave it here…

I don’t know who that is
