Itās a US cop show from about 15-20 years ago. Fairly gritty. Only ran for 2 or 3 seasons but i thought was enjoyable. It reminded me of Homicide life on the streets in some ways.
Iām not particularly a fan of BB and while I enjoyed BCS a lot more I donāt personally place the same level of expectation on Vince Gilligan as others. That said Pluribus has started well. Decent first two episodes.
Even the basics about what this about was kept really tightly under wraps. Beyind the tag line of saving humanity from happiness no one really knew anything about it. The assumption was it must be a pretty weird concept and they didnt want to waste time trying to summarize it.
Turns out it was pretty easy to summarize but still weird as fuck. Im all in.
Watched the first 2 last night and was pretty disappointed. Itās still early and there is another one to watch now after yesterday but the early signs for what they are doing with this arent encouraging. And more important, it just wasnt particularly interesting.
Iām probably in the minority but I think Castle Rock epitomised everything Stephen Kingās works were about and itās one of those shows whose cancellation I havenāt got over. Writing, directing, casting and performances in particular, that whole uneasy autumn vibe, and people being as big monsters as any horrors lurking around⦠Just great in my opinion.
As for Welcome to Derry, Iām watching it with interest, though I kind of hoped that the accent would be on psychological horror, rather than gore. Iām not disappointed but Iād rate it at 7/10 so far. Itās a bit like Doctor Sleep in the sense that everything is looking nice, technically good, casting and performances are OK but⦠It just doesnāt leave its mark on me.
Yeah I liked Castle Rock as well, but I have lower expectations for a Hulu production than for a big budget HBO one. I think though Hulu took advantage of their lower budget to put the focus on a compelling story focused on characters in a way that Derry has not delivered yet
Yeah, good character building is the foundation of good psychological horror - in my opinion at least. Welcome to Derry focuses more on lore building, gore and jump scares. That said, Castle Rock had some absolute acting heavyweights, so their talents had to be properly utilised - and they were. Damn, I miss that show.
Have a few weeks off work so the tv is getting binged. Finished Slow Horses, the available episodes of Down cemetery road and have just started on Pluribus.
I love Mick Herronās writing, and DCR looks like another fine adaptation. Great casting with Thompson and Wilson.
Iām enjoying the obvious Wyndham influence on Pluribus. Great start.
The start is reminiscent of Day of the Triffids. Not as blatant as 28 days later but itās a similar theme of being working to survive and understand a sudden apocalyptic event. There are more obvious parallels with The Midwich Cuckoos.
Havenāt read The Chrysalids yet, itās in my pile!
Definitely worth a read. Iām always surprised it has never been adapted. I had a spate of reading Wyndham stuff when the BBC did their Triffids adaptation in the 1980s.
Shrinking is a great little show. Found S2 to be better than S1, a lot funnier and hits deeper emotionally.
Moved onto Murderbot, interesting in parts and Skarsgard does well to keep character, but too much first person narrating got in the way and put me off, got through it in the end as the episodes are shorter than the time I spend on the bog.
Netflix has a new mini series called Death by Lightening about the presidency and assassination of James Garfield. He was Americaās second shortest serving president after being assassinated a few months into his administration by a fantasist who believed his involvement in the campaign (no official involvement) warranted him a role in the administration and ultimately lashed out and not getting this recognition.
Itās absolutely brilliant. It feels like the textbook HBO mini series that cleans up at the end of year awards. Itās only 4 episodes and so it absolutely zips in a way that period pieces like this tend not to. But its mostly the performances. Itās loaded with big hitters all acting their arses off and balancing each other brilliantly. Michael Shannon, Nick Offerman, Shea Wiggham, and Bradley Whitford are all brilliant. but Matthew Macfadyen as the deranged assassin steals it.
