The TV Thread redux

Meanwhile I’ve swiftly moved from ‘waiting until more episodes are released before I start’ to ‘this sounds shit, guess I won’t bother’ on both RoP and HotD :joy:

I had the same trouble watching Witcher and Dark. Stopped watching Dark altogether.

HOD is very good. Not read the books.

Have read LOTR and hate ROP. Hideous.

With Witcher S1 I was definitely helped by being very familiar with the source material, would have been very confusing otherwise*.

With Dark I was utterly baffled by the first few episodes though and gave up.

*With Witcher S2 I was definitely hindered by being very familiar with the source material, as it absolutely shat the bed.

RoP is good I think, haven’t tried HotD yet.

Have you read, and then watched the Hobbit :sunglasses:

I’m opposite. I’m enjoying ROP.

HoD is ok. Could be much better. I feel like everything we watched on HoD so far could have been condensed into 20 minutes and then, eventually, maybe, if we’re lucky, the king will actually die and the entertaining part of the show will start. It’s like having 5 hour recap of last time, on HoD… and the show hasn’t actually kicked off yet.

Agreed. I was apprehensive but have very much enjoyed it so far.

I struggle to find anything remotely redeeming at all about HoD though. I get they are building motivations for why the different factions in the coming civil war are on the sides they are, and why the war even starts, but it all just feels so inconsequential. Any time something important happens we just fly right by the repercussions of it, essentially training us to treat everything we see as meaningless.

Whole thing is a travesty and aside from looking mostly very nice, bloody awful.

Ifti, have you seen the Aussie series ‘Mystery Road’?
It’s a good one in my opinion.

Is it on Netflix? I will check if it’s available here.

Weren’t the hobbits all vaguely West-Country in the films?

90% of Netflix is garbage but its user interface is great so it’s easy and painless to find something worth watching. Can’t say the same for Prime or Disney+.

I would agree with that one for the most part. Prime is a mess with inclusive content and add-ons muddled up. I find it easier to do a Google search and see if what I want is available.

Disney+ is an odd one because it is much more focused but at least two of its brands, Disney and Star (essentially 20th Century Fox), have a huge and worthwhile archive going back to the 1930s. It should be easier to find the older stuff because, at least to me, that is one of the major selling points of it.

Dis+ Netflix and AP are all a doddle on Sky+. All a pain on a PC.

I’m really enjoying it. I largely think people who had decided they hated before seeing it, hate it, and people willing to give it a chance are generally positive.

If you want to see real dialect based oppression I point you toward Octonauts, which is always willing to use an accent as a shorthand for some negative characteristic.

Whenever a fish is too thick or belligerent to accept the Octonauts help, they are are always scousers. Always.

And once they even had a fish that had loads of baby’s but never left her burrow, and they gave her a US Deep South accent. Even had all her kids calling her ‘Momma’.

I had to watch it a lot, alright?

I hated season 8 of GOT, you could tell where the books stopped and the show runners took over. Wasn’t optimistic for HOD. Loved all of LOTR, had no reason to dislike ROP. Absolutely inverse IMHO. Galadirrrrrrrriell is the hideous character we expected. Matt Smith and Paddy C are exceptional.

I strongly advise you get a vpn. Much better value than Netfux.

I’m too lazy (though I claim to be minimalist) my friend. I have Netflix only because my nephew shared his account. I haven’t even installed set-top box for my TV.

Is this the one you are talking about? There’s some episodes available on YouTube.

That’s actually the third season, but is a prequel to everything else. So, chronologically it goes:

Season 3 - Origin
Movie
Season 1
Season 2

There’s also another film called Goldstone, which I haven’t seen. There may be other MR aficionados out there with more accurate info.
