When all is said and done, the mechanics of putting someone on the Supreme Court, as well as the quantity of justices allowed, is going to need a Constitutional Amendment.

Right now it’s all dirty tricks, and there’s no good faith at all.

normal country

the headline doesn’t mention they’re facing upwards of 20 years in jail if convincted, and the link & encouragement to snitch on others at the bottom of this entirely uncritical news item is a nice touch

just from a strategic POV, it’s utterly asinine to always let the opponent dictate the terms of debate/conflict–it’s very easy to say that the US wasn’t ‘socialist’ when it had higher union density, a thriving middle class, and a higher standard of living

instead he’s begging people to take a deeper look at his abysmal right-wing record

truly inspiring

I can say, without doubt, the way that the Republican party acts is not reflective of the Koch values.

I know they are portrayed as evil, master puppeteers etc but the philosophical basis (even though I disagree with ideological principles) is one of good. I know that will be jarring to anyone left leaning. They belive (rightly or wrongly) that their values are for the good of society.

There influence is likely to to dimish substanically over the next 5-10 years. David Koch passed away last year, Charles Koch is in his mid 80s and is already stepping back (almost part time). There is uncertaintly about the future of Koch companies and how they will continue after he leaves. They may split up, be sold off, or Charles son (Chase) make take over.

I’ve been following US politics quite closely since the election of Trump , but being a Brit living in France , I don’t have anywhere near the insights that some of our posters on here have.

What I would really like to know is how you would predict the race for the Presidency and the Senate (I’m assuming the Dems keep the House) in November.

I’m a keen poll-watcher too and ,as far as I can discern , the race is incredibly stable and Biden maintains a healthy lead both nationally and (less so , but still) in the swing states.

Would love to hear your predictions and whether or not you think the SC nomination will affect the vote.

Oh no- not another one. @Flobs is bad enough…

The stability is a key point. Some of the more high profile models have Biden with a higher chance of winning than they had for Clinton at similar levels of polling advantage. The difference is explained by the relative stability we’ve seen.

However, and with full appreciation that some will take this as conspiratorial, but there will be massive efforts to subvert the process. In addition to bog standard GOP voter disenfranchisement efforts at the local and state level, we now have the President openly engaging in disinformation efforts, including threatening to declare victory the night of the election, we also have various federal agencies including the DOJ seemingly on side, and we’re now shaping up to solidify a court that prop up any act that see Trump does to claim victory.

Predictions under these circumstances are fool hardy.

To your point, @Limiescouse:

Honestly, it is rampant. It is the downside of the localization of the US electoral process because this approach ends up working as a result of death by a thousand cuts, which minimizes the effect of each individual story.

Yup. People are overloaded with news anymore, so it tends to get watered down, not to mention Trump fatigue - people get sick of hearing about trump/GOP and their nonsense, so they become desensitized to it.

Is that true :astonished:

Unsure, but I wouldn’t put it past them. A part of me hopes that most of these kinds of stories are nonsense, and that we’ll have a clean (by US standards) election and Biden will win and Trump will leave office and we’ll go back to some semblence of “normal”, but one can’t help but feel that we’re witnessing the beginning of the end of the American Experiment.

We are in the death throes of neo-conservatism, and they’re doing everything they can to preserve themselves, but it seems inevitable that it will die. What remains to be seen is how much collateral damage will be caused.

God I hope so, the U.S. would be even more fucked up than it is now.
Plus we don’t need Boris getting any similar ideas(unless Dom is already doing it)

The sheer amount of ratfuckery going on , by Trump , the GOP and the Russians , is breathtaking , and even moreso that it is all going on in plain sight.

It’s hard to comprehend , for an outsider , just how the US has descended this far. How the fuck can anyone think that this is going to be a ‘free and fair’ election ?

Right? Hope and positivity is great, but not when it’s delusional.

I eagerly await the column by that guy who does US news writing the way US media covers stories in other parts of the world, using terms like ‘the southeastern region of the country dominated by fundamentalists opposed to’ and ‘The surprise dismissal of a powerful security services chief Tuesday night is widely seen here as a part of strongman President Donald Trump’s efforts to sideline critics and consolidate power, raising concerns about the state of democracy and the rule of law in this fragile but strategically vital North American country.’
