I think with Brexit, it was never a case of flat out denying leave got more votes. It was a matter of what the votes actually meant, did the referendum give the subsequent government the mandate to pursue the course of action they did, and should such a massive upheaval to the country be carried on such a small majority in favour.
Case in point. Pretty much every single prominent leave campaigner assured leave voters that we wouldn’t be leaving the single market. To find shortly after the referendum most of them pushing for a hard Brexit undermined our democracy a lot more than remainers arguing about the result.
