Thiago ALCANTARA: 2022/23

I think I will auction it off to be honest.

Go to Paddy Power

Stick the proceeds on our new midfielder(s) getting slated by you in the first in match thread.

Certain winner.
Very short odds though.

There is not a perfect situation where playersā€™ qualities, wages, availability are all perfectly aligned. I didnā€™t have a problem if we decided that we cannot keep both Gini and Hendo. Both Mane and Salah. Itā€™s called gradually changing a team. But yeah, when we signed Thiago, I did think already in that summer that we need another one of more hard working qualities, to put it that way.

The big limitation with the ā€œheā€™s still valuable for x number of games heā€™s availableā€ is you cannot plan for when he is going to be available. You end up not being able to plan when you want to use, or remove from the firing line, the other players picking up the slack and that often means requiring them to play when weā€™d prefer them not to because the sports car you kept around is not available when you need him.

Thiago was not a player who we need a fee for. He was bought on the cheap, has very little if anything left on his booked value due to amortization (i fucking went there) and so the biggest financial issue for next season is the salary he is going to take relative to his on field importance. Allowing him to leave for free should a club want him loses us almost nothing and saves us a lot.

Still think we would get a certain fee if he would move on this summer.

I have no problem with that IF we get a proper younger fitter not so easily injured midfielder in return. If not I would keep him and hope he plays 20 good matches.

I struggle to see who would offer a fee for him, be a place that is attractive enough for him to move to, and match his current salary. Barca tick 2 of those boxes, but just not the likelihood of offering a fee.

Another way to look at thisā€¦ Thiago on Ā£200k pw - Curtis on Ā£40k pw + Bajectic on about Ā£10k pw = Ā£250kpw for 3 first team midfieldersā€¦
With Thiago, it is what it isā€¦ He might be useful for some games next season when we are hunting down 114pts :0)

He is surely going nowhere.

With one year left on his contract he is surely looking for that sign on fee next year.

if heā€™s truly out again for hip surgery, then we should entertain offers to get him off the books in the summer and clear up salary space. We arenā€™t that rich to afford luxuries like his wage for 15games/yr.

excellent footballer, maybe one of the most talented Iā€™ve seen in a while with the ball at his feet. But not really useful if heā€™s not able to play regularly. maybe at $70-80k/week as a 30min/game sub?

Is this the same hip injury that he has been struggling with for a couple if years?

Klopp just confirmed, in the pre match presser, that it is his hip, hes having/had surgery, and out for remainder of the season.

Back for pre-season training, which is why hes gone under the knife now.

Sounds a bit like the Diaz situation, where theyve tried to avoid surgery and focus on rehab, and in the end had to operate anyway.

The downside is Diazā€™s came from a clear incident. These sorts of niggles without a clear precipitating factor are the sort players get when they spend whatā€™s left of their career being chased by the next impending niggle.

Iā€™ve loved this guy and am in the camp that he has lived up to expectations, but itā€™s difficult to see how at this point he offers the value we need anymore. The quality is undoubted, but we need reliability in this area of the pitch for next season.

I hope he doesnā€™t fail his next clubs medicalā€¦

His injury ā€˜savedā€™ our season. Weā€™d be in ECL or even without European football next season if it wasnā€™t for it.

Thats harsh

Someone is in a bad mood this morning :sunrise_over_mountains:

Not just harsh; Blatantly unfair as well.

@GermanRed was against him coming to play for us from day one because of his injury record now it seems he does not even like him when he is fit ā€¦ :joy:

Nope.

Was against him because of his injury record AND (while he was/is a world class midfielder) he doesnā€™t have the qualities required to help us playing the style of football that made us winning CL/PL under Klopp.

People said ā€šheā€™ll take us to the next levelā€™

We made three steps back since winning the League. Should be easy for him now to help us make one step forward in the final year of his contract
