Iâm going to say this one more time and fully expect to be taken to task by tactical nerds who are much better informed than me.
Iâd have Trent playing right midfield with a tough tackling pacy right back behind him. That would give him the freedom to use his best qualities without constantly having to rush back to cover opposition attacks down that side. I really think heâd blossom into a fantastic midfield general.
The whole âextra manâ thing doesnât convince me if it means one man less out of possession. I realise that I am tactically ignorant and probably a dinosaur or something, but I think thatâs what Bob Paisley would do.

It doesnât. Even in our old formation we didnât have all our defenders in a back 4 when we lost the ball. Weâre not really any more exposed at the back in this shape than we were before, when weâd typically have the FB on the side where the ball was pressed up so high pressing that he was higher up the pitch than even the midfield.
What this mainly does is alter the starting positions of the players in front of the defense so we get one more player in the areas of the pitch where weâre likely to lose it so we can press more effective. That is the context in which weâre trying to gain the âextra playerâ.

Yep he already had one and from today until 11-07-2023 the day the players who played internationals have to report is 3 weeks.
This is a week more than they had the last years, they should be well rested at the beginning of pre-season.
