And also the default position of not giving the benefit of the doubt. If something could be interpreted in a way as to provide offence then that is the way it will be interpreted and assumed it was meant. The mistake is always that of the person who has been wrongly maligned, never that of the person hastily maligning…as if the need for greater understanding falls only on one side.

referee in French is arbitre and in Romanian is arbitru and according to google, Romanian word for gypsy is tigan - although I don’t always have the greatest belief in google when it comes to translation

In Russian, if you say “негр”, it will mean negro. But in the Russian language it’s never offensive at all. On the opposite, if you say “black” in Russian, it may be much more offensive in some context. Ridiculous, how people put stamps on people that easily.
I don’t deny though that he should’ve considered that on the international level because it’s now so combustible.

“Gitan” as well? Odd how it’s an anagram of tigan. Presumably though, if Webo used “tsigane” in French a Romanian may well understand that they were saying gypsy given the similar sound to “tigan”?
