I always thought that Wengers job was made easier by having a solid defence and awesomely named quality keeper. He still obviously made a difference, especially with his midfield and attack signings.

One of the most interesting comments Iâve ever heard because it runs so counter to the popular narrative was Lee Dixon saying that Wenger was nothing special as a coach. He wasnât demeaning him and credits him for extending his top level career, but he said it was his strength on those areas other than on the training ground that made him successful. And to that point, his early successes were very much built on inheriting a back line that coached itself.

Iâm not surprised to hear Dixon say that.
An Arsenal fan I worked with said to me back in 2003/4 that Wenger would not win any of the major titles once the last of the defence he inherited retired/moved on.
And Ray Parlour has talked of how Stepanov got his contract.
But I do wonder how much of it really was a coaching issue, rather than not signing a quality CB like VVD to lead them?

Must say itâs been a great game so far. Two teams playing well. Maybe slightly against the run of play the Atalanta score, but fun. Both teams playing good footie so far to be honest. And such a great atmosphere on the Atalanta stadium !

Atalanta are going to allow to many chances for them to win this I suspect. Because in all honesty, MU are creating much more than them (although Atalanta just had a very nice chance there after MUâs defence let the Atalanta player slip in between). But so far, I still have the suspicion that MU will win this judging by events on the pitch. But of course, Atalanta leads so I may be totally wrong. If Atalanta gets 2-0, then itâs quite different of course. But Atalanta are having problems with the speed.

Edit: Atalanta taken over the game now and is the best team at current.
