UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

Why are you so surprised? She was dissing her school when campaigning for leader, only for many other contemporaries to come out and say she was telling porkies.

No itā€™s not that . (I knew already about her little embellishments.) Itā€™s more the knack she has of completely mangling sayings and clichĆ©s and making them almost meaningless. She must write this shit herself as she does it all the time.

Iā€™ll try, and Iā€™ll try to keep it serious as well.

Heā€™s apparently at the opposite end of the Conservative party to her. Weā€™ve now got the tail wagging the dog (as if that wasnā€™t the case already for several years).

I still think sheā€™ll be gone soon, and I do think Labour need to table that no confidence motion. If the Tories get a new PM in place theyā€™ll all get behind that person and it doesnā€™t stick. Stick the motion in and they either back her or they dont. If they dont back her we have a GE. If they do, and then oust her theyā€™ll look like a right bunch of plonkers (politely).

and to finish

ummmmmmmm

Tory MPs unhappy with Trussā€™s performance at news conference

Weā€™ve been gauging reaction from Conservative circles to Liz Trussā€™s news conference and it has has been largely negative.

One backbencher told the BBC: ā€œI voted for Liz but I think she just appointed her successor [Jeremy Hunt]. Awful. Sadly I think that hastened her demise.ā€

A former cabinet minister described the news conference as ā€œawful. That did not look like a woman fighting back. Thereā€™s not much reason for optimism.ā€

Another former minister said: ā€œI canā€™t see how she survives. It was her policy."

An MP first elected in 2019 added: ā€œShe canā€™t sack a chancellor and pretend she had nothing to do with it. She trashed our reputation, sheā€™s the captain, the sinking ship is hers."

5 days max.

We elected/made her possibleā€¦ says much more about us than her. Almost feel like she is the victim here.

Iā€™m not so sure on that. I think his position isnā€™t that far from what hers is. Neither is Sunakā€™s. Cutting taxes and reducing the role of the state. (fiscally conservative?)

Off the top of my head, I canā€™t think of which leading figures within the party would represent the Social Conservative wing (Clarke, Heseltine etc).

Very good, massive fan of QL, not a show that could be made the same today. Alā€Iā€™m just going to check on the ladies locker roomsā€ etc. Sadly, Dr Beckett never made it home :pensive:

I think heā€™s as far ā€œleftā€ as they are able to go despite still being a long way to the right if that makes sense.

I think the main point is that itā€™s possible that he isnā€™t 100% her appointment.

A remake/ reboot is currently being filmed. I saw a tweet by the original actor saying he was not involved in it. I would be surprised if it lasted more than a season as the original show and cast was so iconic.

Itā€™s pretty much nailed on that he isnā€™t. He backed Sunak in the leadership election and she only picked one other backer of Sunak in her original cabinet.

My gut says heā€™s a compromise rather than a full on ā€œyou appoint this person or elseā€ scenario. Iā€™ve never felt Hunt was part of the in crowd within the party but I could be wrong. Just a feeling.
