So you don’t agree with my shotgun stance?
Not really.
I don’t think it solves anything.
Especially at a time when the government has zero legitimacy in the eyes of many, with a massive crisis hanging over their heads.
Would have got the bypass built a hell of a lot earlier and saved millions?
Yes, but it begs the question whether the right things, discussions and decisions were made many years before the site works actually started. With any project that may have some level of contraversy, the Comms and decision making, has to be bang on. Basically you need to bring people with you on the journey.
Even then you’re unlikely to get everyone on board and some level of disruption becomes inevitable. The price for freedom of speech if you like.
I was thinking about Hunts comments yesterday on likely tax increases and spending cuts. Now if he stays true to form which will be hammering the wrong people and places again it will again stifle growth. He is a deplorable choice as Chancellor imo.
Even a VAT increase was mentioned by someone along the line. Again that squeezes the economy rather than open it up.
Whoever they choose would be crap. They all are.
I’m old enough to remember the birth of VAT. I remember it being described as a “luxury” tax, because it was originally just on ‘non essential’ things such as TVs and such. Now it’s pretty much on everything. If people have less money they’ll buy less stuff. If the cost of that stuff increases then they’ll buy even less. I’m no economist, but surely a CoE must know that it’s counter productive?
Disgusting politics.
Exactly my thinking but I suspect his sole focus will be balancing a properly screwed up budget. I think he has a minimum £50bn hole to plug. He’ll reverse the 45% tax decrease because he has to save face, but will hit other areas hard and not bat an eyelid.
Note how the Times lays the blame for trashing the Conservatives reputation for “fiscal responsibility” at Truss’ feet while Cameron and Johnson did very little for the economy during their respective stints. I concede Boris had to deal with Covid but the point still stands IMO.
Which is why a benevolent dictatorship is the best model. I vote for me
