UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

Hopefully that’s the end of Johnson. He can go back to panel shows and philandering.

Good riddance.

A bit dated now this, but regarding Braverman’s vile words a few days ago, this is such a brilliant and funny take !

Are these serious tweets or just parody accounts?

I’d wager most of them are real.

All I can imagine is she slunk off to the toilet with a lipstick covered poster of some fat clown and a few bottles of VP sherry and just hasn’t come back out yet.

Oh dear :flushed:

I had a look last night, clicked through some legitimate commentators on Twitter and what’s above is pretty much all you see.

Unless the whole world is bots?!?!?!

Just to say something different, I am not terribly upset that there won’t be a GE. The Conservatives look like they might vote someone in that isn’t a complete car crash, which means the ideal scenario is that the Conservatives clean up their own shit and Labour doesn’t need to waste all its political capital recovering the country.

The obvious question mark is how much Rishi can claw back popularity in the polling, especially if he does manage to balance economic recovery with keeping voters on side with regards to spending cuts/tax increases. Certainly its going to be better news for Conservatives than Johnson or Truss (even factoring in what could have a been a Boris II Bounce) in terms of polling, but it will be interesting to see, given how much dislike there is for him from Conservative members, whether that will carry through also with the middle ground swing voters. He might have a bit of support there. The next few weeks/months of polling I will be following closely.

question as an outsider? What makes Sunak viable as a Candidate esp when he was rejected first time around for Truss ?

He was right about Truss and they were wrong, not that many of them will actually admit that.

Just because he’s right about Truss (even before the mini budget, Truss didn’t really inspire) , doesn’t mean he’s still viable.

Especially seeing that while he has the MP’s on his side, he isn’t necessarily popular with the conservative members.

I imagine many MP’s are simply voting Rishi to avoid Boris. So its questionable how much true support he has amongst his peers, let alone the Conservative members. Conservatives are simply voting the best of a bad bunch, with the alternative being a GE in which almost every one of them will lose their seat. We know the Conservatives value self preservation over everything else and for whatever cost, so they are just living up to their reputation.

So to answer your earlier question. He’s not necessarily a viable candidate but the most viable they have.
