UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

Off the top of my head, I think the most common reasons tend to be friends/family already present in the UK (and hence a support structure), as well as being able to speak the language. Maybe cultural ties play a small role, but not sure.

It depends where they are from but a great many, from Afghanistan for example, have ties with British military / overseas aid. This is also true of many Afghans seeking asylum in Germany. There was a Afghan on the German night school course I was on that had worked as an interpreter for the Bundeswehr/NATO.

ā€™ Why, when already in a European country are so many looking to continue to the UK? ā€™

Itā€™s a lot easier to work in the UK on the black than it is in a lot of European countries due to lax employment regulations. Also you donā€™t need an ID Card.

That accounts for the black market. Anyone claiming asylum is looking for refuge because as soon as they are known to the authorities they canā€™t work.

The black market is a completely different beast and needs to be pursued under modern slavery and employment regulations. For some reason there has always been a reluctance for the UK government to pursue this.

Because the tories would lose all their nannies and cleaners if they clamped down.

Not sure this is entirely correct, Theresa May saw tackling modern slavery as one of her priorities when she was at the Home Office and she carried this interest with her when she became PM.

I donā€™t know how Bravermanā€™s decision to re-arrange portfolios and make Modern Slavery into more of an immigration issue will affect this though.

This is a fascinating thread about the US.

But this line I found particularly interesting as it was something has also said in his summer leadership bid.

ā€œThe group has blocked huge projects across Virginia. Their main argument: Solar should be on rooftops, not rural land.ā€

U-turn time. Looks like the main difference between Truss and Sunak is that heā€™s slowerā€¦

,

I think he has already rowed back on at least two of his campaign commitments - the brexit legislation and now the Ā£10 charge for missing NHS appointments.

Agreed. Iā€™d just add that this is a problem of those on the right. The solution is never to allow the right into government.

Just wanted to add a bit of rigour here. Fascism can be fairly used if you apply Roger Eatwellā€™s ā€˜syncreticā€™ definition (see his seminal work on Fascism). As well as being an authority on 20th Century fascism, he has also written extensively on 21 Century populist extremism and, based on your comments, I would highly recommend his work.
