UK Politics Thread (Part 3)

Another massive assumption on your part. Some might be picked off, doesn’t explain the enormous disparity in numbers between men and women arriving.

I know this was directed at @jaffod but my position is that I’d welcome a larger (but still relatively small) number of refugees but I’d like to see, at least in Australia, migration by others made more difficult*. We have far too many asian and european ‘students’ and extended family being allowed to settle here at the behest of the business council and property industry as it lowers wages and keeps rents high. These migrants are not committed like refugees - they retain ties to their country of origin and often plan to return and don’t see themselves as ‘australian’ unless they end up living longer in their new country than they spent in their old. We now have a situation, for instance, where voters need instructions in chinese in some areas - there is no way we should be allowing, for instance, the Chinese diaspora to import their extended families and grandparents who are too old to contribute but add to the burden on the health system and whose political loyalties lie with the CCP. Thats not good for social cohesion and ultimately fuels the far right.

*I say this as one myself who came over here as the son of an ‘economic migrant’

That would make the best hotel-based comedy since Fawlty Towers.

This was discussed a few weeks ago on the Middle East thread. Overall, there aren’t any major differences between men and women in terms of refugee numbers. However, those that are taking a perilous route to claim asylum are typically going to be older teenagers and young men because the very young, old and infirm are not capable of making such a journey and the risks for girls and women are much higher (many are raped or forced into sex work). Hence it tends to be young men that make the dangerous trip and can then claim asylum for themselves and their family.

Most coming to the UK either have familial connections to the country or have often worked directly for the UK state (e.g. in Afghanistan). Aside from that, if they have English Language skills, moving to an English speaking country will likely make their claim and possibility of settled refuge much easier.

Also, don’t confuse the language. Refugees who travel to a country and claim asylum on arrival are not “illegal”. They are arriving on the basis of internationally agreed laws which were drawn up following the Second World War. Britain was a major driver behind those laws. They do have appropriate documentation or, if they have claimed asylum on arrival, will be issued with it.

If you are talking about illegal migration then that is people who are present in a country without the appropriate documentation. That could simply be an administrative thing (overstaying a visa) or it could be that they are working without an appropriate work visa. This also covers people who are smuggled into the country in the back of an HGV. These people will not want to become known to the authorities at all which is the exact opposite of asylum seekers. This obviously needs to be dealt with by the police and immigration officials but it is also worth noting that the individuals are also likely to be the victims of modern slavery.

How many times do you need it explained? The hotels issue is a Tory creation, nurtured by their tabloid buddies. I’ve been in the hotels and they’re grim. Like Mascott described but worse because of the untreated trauma and distress, and claustrophobia.

It would cost far less to process asylum claims, send some back where they came from, and let those at risk of persecution stay here and make a life for themselves. Instead the Tories are spaffing millions up the wall with the singular purpose of making people think and say the things you’re saying here. And maybe if it’s thought and said enough people will be so angry with migrants that they’ll ignore the utter fucking shambles of this government and vote for them again

@jaffod you don’t know what your talking about!
I don’t know what your talking about!

Anyway why get so hot and bothered the UK is a mess and it has nothing to do with people in hotels. It’s much to do with who and what people voted for!

Its a question worth asking as to why someone would pay a gang for a seat in a dinghy. What’s the motivation? Worth noting it happens in the Mediterranean as well. A little easier to understand there with it being a route from Syria and Africa etc.

Wondered if that’s a Tory myth or actually true and there’s other reasons. Odd that no one has actually asked and published refugees their motivations.

Still comes down to processing applications imo.

Just leave this here

Says ‘Don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about’.

Immediately spouts a loads of bollocks that proves he does have the first fucking clue what he’s talking about🤣

Let’s pick these points apart.

Under international law, to which we are a signatory, there is no requirement for an asylum seeker to claim asylum in the first safe country. That is a myth, and a very convenient one for racists to spread, because we’re an island on the edge of Europe - It’s physically impossible not to arrive here through a safe country. Don’t fall for their lies.

It’s a matter of fact that when trying to escape a country to start a new life, people will want to settle somewhere where they already have ties, they speak the language etc.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that people want to come here, but what might be a surprise is that we actually take one of the lowest numbers in Europe - all those ‘safe countries’ that you want people to seek asylum in, are already taking more than us.

Again, in accordance with international law, they have every right to be here. As soon as anyone claims asylum they have a right to remain an have their case heard. It doesn’t even matter how they arrived. There is legally no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker. Even if they arrive on small boat, parachute in or dig a fucking tunnel. It doesn’t matter - they have right to remain and have their case for Asylum heard. We don’t know if they are economic migrants until we process their claim.

Yes, because the conservatives have basically stopped processing claims. Your anger on this is entirely fair, but directed in completely the wrong places.

There are reasons why the Tories have done this. Entirely consistent with their behaviour on everything. That taxpayers money is going somewhere, isn’t it? And it’s not going to bloody asylum seekers.

But the main attraction of breaking the asylum system and creating a crisis, is that it creates an enemy who can then be attacked, appealing to people’s worst, base instincts. By your ignorant contributions here, it’s clearly a strategy that has some merit.

Labour have already set out their stall on migration. They would re-establish legal routes to stop migration being controlled by criminal gangs. They would then process claims and actually deport claims that don’t meet the threshold. Saying it would be no different under Labour is as wildly wrong as everything else you’ve said here.

Wish he’d made a video doing that!

I get it now.

The whole migrant crisis has been engineered by the Tory government so people will vote them back in at the next election. Because that makes sense doesn’t it? Show everyone how fucking incompetent you are and that will win you votes.
Does that apply to the cost of living crisis too? Or the breakdown in public services? The NHS? The massive rise in unsolved crime?
I see it clearly now. I’ve never voted Tory in my life but they’ll be getting my vote at the next election!

Yeah, like I’ve just said, I see it all clearly now. It’s all a Tory ploy to gain votes. They’ve got mine that’s for sure. Another 12 months of fucking up the country beyond repair and they’re guaranteed a landslide victory.
I see you’ve swallowed Labour’s stance on it all hook, line and sinker. Because if they say they’ll do something then they obviously will, right? I have some magic beans you might be interested in…

I mean pretty much, yes. This is all down to decisions that they have made in government.
