So letâs do this. @Mascot I think we know you never smacked your kids. Are they well behaved now? Did you watch as they reached up and burnt themselves on the kettle and with a strong but firm voice say âDonât do that?â Or did you think fuck it and let them burn themselves? First time jnr used a glue gun I did the warning and later applied the gallons of cold water. But then you donât give a glue gun to a toddler as you should be too busy teaching them to behave without hitting them. Bet you donât answer honestly.
You can say itâs bollocks all you like, but itâs true.
Decades ago it was common that men hit their wives. And it would be justified as âjust when they deserve itâ, âwhen they need a short, sharp shockâ, âas long it isnât excessive and out of controlâ
Exactly the same arguments that are used to justify hitting children.
Here is the charming Sean Connery justifying when itâs permissible to hit a women. All the same platitudes. Only use an open hand. Only as a last resort. Only when she wonât shut up. Etc.
There were a lot of Sean Conneryâs around in the seventies. My Grandad was one. Liked to give Grandma a little clip every now and then, just when she stepped out of line. Never out of control or in anger. Until the day he went at her with an iron so hard he nearly killed her and she ended up in hospital.
What does it matter? Iâm say a few decade and you are saying fifty years. Is that the level of semantics weâre going for.
The point is that people would use the same arguments to justify hitting their spouses and people use today to justify hitting the kids. Thatâs just fucking true, as much as you donât want it to be.
Go back centuries and youâve got Slave owner trying to justify hitting their slave by claiming itâs only when they step our of line, and for their own good really.
Being a parent is a bit like driving. Everyone thinks they are great and itâs everyone else thatâs the problem.
But here you are, on a public forum, proudly admitting and evangelising the righteousness of hitting a child, in defiance of the mountain of evidence thatâs itâs harmful in a variety of ways, as well as being totally ineffective.
