UK Politics Thread (Part 3)

Yes, water cannons.

Must have missed that hitting the news. What number have we got to? 1 and 2 were reasonably well publicised. Didn’t even know we’d had 3. Was I drunk and it was very quick?

Or is this just hyperbolic nonsense?

Oof. Its horrible to think about her child self and having to live through that sort of life in large part because of her parents. The article touched upon the level of poverty the country is facing these days compared to while she was growing up, but it didn’t really touch on the UK education and how it has changed since then.

These days the only thing that matters in a school is Ofsted scores and how well they are shifting top students to the top institutions. Schools are a conveyor-belt of pawns to demonstrate to the world the school/area/country’s education standards. The Katriona O’Sullivans of this world are just not worth it

That’s not something to be laid at the teacher’s door. They have their very specific school-instructed goals and little to do with supporting the students, because with stretched resources, something has to give, and supporting those on the bottom of the rung to achieve what they are capable of is much more resource intensive than providing further support to middle and top rung students who can raise the image of the school.

I wonder how many Ms Arkinsons and Mr Pickerings there are in UK schools these days? How many of them are in a position to help impoverished children? I wonder how many O’Sullivans?

Sorry, that’s demonstrable bullshit. I had the pleasure of listening to an outstanding school’s head tearing strips off the inspector and explaining in detail everything they did for the good of the kids, not the grade. Glorious stuff. “Some” schools prioritise OFSTED over all and I’ve worked in a few of those but the idea that it’s the only thing that matters is incorrect.

Shit parents, who knew.

PMQs in 20 with my fav lefty

You misspelt “Cuntish”

Colour me shocked that you are offended given you were/are? on a BoG. I’ve seen it from the other side of you from down looking up instead of you up looking down (which is you to a tee really).

Do you break out with hives if you even think about something that relates to socialism? Like, in this case, the parents are a big part to blame. But those same parents could be (probably are) from a long line of families who have been generationally impoverished. This is why it’s so important to break the cycle. Education is one (big) element of that.

When I read that story I don’t think “fuck her parents”. I think about what was necessary for her to break out of that type of living. Yes, the will to be different needs to be there, but that has to be also matched with the opportunity and support which this woman had.

You always love to simplify these issues. Blame the problem on whatever is the easiest that provides the least amount of social change, since any type of social change would possibly have an impact of your own personal wellbeing.

I suspect given how well some of them have managed to enrich themselves and isolate themselves from the public services the rest of us depend upon, there are very few ways to inconvenience the people who need to be inconvenienced.

Not to mention, it’ll probably have been criminalised since obviously protecting themselves is the most important thing.

However, I certainly wouldn’t mind inconveniencing the people who voted for this government. The only problem is that they wouldn’t see it as a consequence of their actions, if anything, they’d be more fervent in their support for this government, just out of spite.

It is simple. Stop burning oil. As the starting point to solving a problem, it doesn’t really get any simpler.

Just so you know, I simply can’t be arsed with you on this one. You don’t have anything to contribute of any value. No offence.

We can’t go from fossil fuel to Green energy overnight without a catastrophic result. There has to be a transition period.

“Insult, no offence”. Do you understand how language works? You’re a walking contradiction. Just because you seemingly love any kind of protest (maybe on the basis you’ve been a spotter on them) doesn’t mean that people like me, who want to get stuff done, shouldn’t voice a sensible way to end the problem. Guessing you’re in favour of people supergluing themselves to the motorway?

You can’t be arsed because you have no argument against my brilliance. Somethings never change.

Yeah, but that transition period just keeps punted into the long grass over and over again. There was a time when a gentle transition was possible. We squandered it.

I’m not offended, I’m just telling you you’re wrong to say that all schools are only interested in OFSTED.

How would you charge your phone to post this wisdom? Or drive your car? Tell me you have an electric one, that would be priceless.

Always the same, it’s not their fault, it’s the institution / government’s fault. Socialism just doesn’t work for very obvious and well proven reasons.

Only about about 43% of UK power generation in 2022 was fossil-fuel based, and given that the primary cap on renewable energy penetration is intermittency, I don’t think two battery-powered devices are an example of a problem.

Which is fine if you’re charging when it’s windy. If we stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow, it would create absolute chaos. Directly affecting those two batteries.

I said I’m not engaging with you. I’ll answer the question posed by anyone else and I’ll talk about it with other people, but not you. You aren’t worth my time. You don’t listen, you don’t engage in good faith, and you don’t have the humility to take on board other viewpoints. I’m tired of your self-satisfied, narrow minded, ego-maniacal bullshit.
