UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

Tell me that what they campaigned on isn’t vastly different from their actions now?

They’re ALL untrustworthy snakes, regardless of party.
That opinion gets mocked or rebuted, despite it playing out in plain sight.

But the welfare bill is unsustainable. A very difficult balancing act to fix. For every chancer there will be a deserving case to suffer.

Low taxation of the rich is unsustainable and is why we are where we are.

That’s not the point though is it?

You were quick to jump on anyone saying they’re all the same i.e useless, self-serving twats, and yet here you are now saying Labour are essentially the Tory party.

That isn’t fair. There are huge differences in how Labour and the Tories go about benefit purges.

For example, Tories tend look gleeful and strident while attacking the disabled, like this is what they got into this for.

Labour politicians tend to look haunted while they go about kicking the shit out the most vulnerable people in society, like they are watching the last embers of their humanity and principles flicker away, judged by the ghosts of their 25 year old selves.

Like I said, huge differences.

I don’t think this is true - there isn’t a 1 to 1 ratio of deserving cases to chancers. Fraudulent benefits claims are a minuscule part of the overall budget.

What is undoubtedly true though, is that a life on benefits isn’t a sustainable and shouldn’t be an aim. I did six months on job seekers, and it’s fucking grim.

But governments fall into the trap of all stick and no carrot. People are simply forced off benefits and into work, the idea being that you can make work more attractive by simply making welfare unsurvivable. This is nonsense.

The biggest issue preventing people who theoretically could work is that work simply does not pay. At the level you are going into when you have been unemployed for years, it just isn’t worth it. And also, you probably still need your wages topping up with Government money to get by anyway.

Add a disability into this equation and you are also considering how do I best manage my condition, how do I get through the pain?

Create a living wage that gives people, regardless of their job status, a dignified, comfortable existence and combine this with employment laws that mean people are treated well in employment, and you’d see the welfare bill drop dramatically.

Then the question is why do it?

Continually trimming the bottom while ignoring the elephant in the room is really not going to get them anywhere.

The RW press will kill you on it regardless if they secretly support it. Meanwhile you’re shedding your base support.

Show me the part where they are being self-serving twats?

I’m criticising them on the basis of policy, and it’s funny because @Mascot below you is telling me I’m not being fair. I don’t think they’ve been funnelling millions of public funds to their best mates yet though?

Is it that unfair? I don’t think the people being affected like this are going to care too much and think “oh but think about the poor politicians!” while they’re suffering from the cuts.

They’ll be too busy trying to survive to do that.

And this is 5 months old

Yes, but the question is, has he done anything to funnel money into private interests?

Also, I find that odd considering the costs of the Downing Street refurbishment not too long ago. Or ar we not counting that now because he repaid it?

Perhaps it’s not really an elephant in the room?

According to an article by the IFS from a year ago, the higher earners over the last 15 years have seen their taxes increase over that period while for average earners it is lower…

It’s just a joke. Nicked off Stewart Lee on immigration, noting that the policies tend to be the same but at least Labour look disappointed in themselves while they do it, and that’s the choice you’ve got
