UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

I would encourage everyone to watch this short. It’s only 90 seconds long.

He is right on division, but as an economist I would expect him to understand the economics of immigration, which can be summarised as who is going to do all the fucking work?

Very fair point.

I’ve watched quite a bit of his content, and his thing is wealth inequality. I don’t think he’s stupid, so I would hazard a guess he’s trying to avoid that visceral reaction to your point that many of the adherents of stop the boats narratives would have.

I feel he’s trying to get both sides to see they’re arguing about the wrong thing. Framing his narrative in a way that appears to agree with one of those sides, and therefore disagree with the other, won’t help him achieve that, I would think.

His main theme is certainly the stripping of wealth, and it appears he is now starting to touch on the division that has been created to continue in that same direction.

In those simple terms I find the UK (and wider) in a very worrying place right now.

Jonathon Pie has also done one of his shouty clips following the Kirk assasination. It’s an interesting perspective that again highlights division.

Ultimately divide and conquer is what its about I guess.

Speaking of inequality…

Yeah, I think he is brilliant. I watch all his videos. But I think on this point he is consciously avoiding the issue.

The main points on immigration which I don’t think a conversation about wealth distribution can avoid are

  1. You can’t have a functioning economy without immigration. There literally isn’t enough working age people to sustain us.

  2. The immigration issue is being stoked and misrepresented by the same people who are hoarding the wealth.

Would I be right in saying you cant have economic growth without immigration. And the whole economic system is built around the “need” for growth.

You can have growth, but it requires increases in productivity.

There has been a big growth in the percentage of over 50s in the UK workforce since 2000. They will need replacing. There were also a large number of people who dropped out of the workforce during the Covid pandemic, and I don’t think they have all returned.

Yeah that’s a real headache for any government in the uk. One of many.

I did find it interesting that the largest proportion of uk immigration is student visa’s that markedly jumped up post Brexit. That is clearly a political decision.

For what crime?

Wouldn’t there be a lot more unwanted attention brought to this by arresting them?

With an aging workforce, who’s gonna pay for their pensions?

Probably. Streisand effect? I think they have to be seen to do something.

I think the bigger issue is who is going to provide for their care. It’s not just finances. It’s actual bodies to fo the work.

These were publicly available images.
Indecent or offensive? Only Trump’s face.
Threatening? It’s just two guys standing together.
Fake? No, this picture is recorded history.

They’re obviously acting tough because this is such an embarrassment for Trump, and Britain by association, but you lie down with dogs and get up with fleas.

Otherwise, it’s hard to see where a law has been broken. Are these guys still in custody?

Let’s wait and see. Don’t see it happening.

The government said back in July that it would do so in September if Israel didnt stop. All the major papers in the UK have been running this story since yesterday, so i think it is very unlikely that it wont happen now.
