UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

Following on from this, they rioted on the weekend leading to their game on Saturday being called off.

But it is antiesemetic to ban them from travelling to UK

With Starmer, I feel as though it’s just reflexive anti-antisemitism. I certainly feel as though under him, the Labour Party has become an entity that instinctively takes the side of Israel on every single thing to avoid the antisemitism label like the plague.

I think this is nail on the head.

Starmer has been nothing if not ham-fisted.

Yeah, Starmer doesn’t seem to want to appear controversial or upset anyone but this just leads to him upsetting a lot more people.

They are so wounded by the anti-semitism stuff, that they are terrified to make it an issue again.

Starmer did not need to get involved in this.

I had to look this up and I’m still lost…

I may have used the wrong gif - should have used the 5th earl of wimbourne rather than Rowley Birkin QC…cos what happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam

Like Mascot says, this is probably a domestic issue he has got himself involved in because of the party’s image and recent events.

Starmer should have stayed out of it. The police assessed the situation and made a judgment call. They have a difficult job to do without the Prime Minister making it even more difficult for them.

No Tel Aviv fans seems a sensible decision, on any number of levels. If the fans are disappointed, turn that disappointment into calling your own government to make some necessary changes.

Another one who is channeling her inner Farage.

They’re all coming out of the woodwork now. I’m surprised Honest Bob Jenrick hasnt jumped to Reform yet.

Pretty disturbing how many people are lapping it up.
Good thing is Reform Councils are in complete disarray, and Farage’s partner is up to her neck in a corruption investigation with the EU.

She’s described as a “rising star”. Yeah, I’ll bet. People like her and Farage were once rightly kept to the margins of public life, where their hateful and divisive messages did least harm but now they’re emboldened by the growing support of like-minded ignorant bigots.

Also his chief of staff is a diehard Zionist

It’s a global problem, that is certainly true. Much of it, most of it recently, is soft power from the US in fact, which has shown the path of populism. But this always existed of course.

But anyway, I actually intended to comment to say that Reform is not “moderatly Right Wing”. It is Right Wing. It’s a populist nationalist party with social conservative elements. Reform is not at all much more right to the National Front in France, just more populist. These days the National Front is also more poulist, again, influence from America and the Maga movement.
AfD is also much more populist these days, so getting closer and closer to Reform and less “extreme” in its outward outreach (this is how you win votes, after all).

The rethoric I see from abroad from Reform, is for me hard to distinguish from the AfD and National Front, except sometimes in tone. Placating Russia, seems to be the chief outlier really. All of these parties focus hard on culture and culture essensialism.

Far Right is a broad category, but to channel the essence of it down to a few points:

  1. Reactionary Conservatism = The country has gone awry ! Everything was better 50 years ago or adoration of a golden age that maybe wasn’t fantastic for everyone but invokes romantic cultural memory.

  2. Nativism = This land belongs to its people, it’s dominant ethnic group. Usually this is ethnic in focus, but sometimes, like in the US, it is purely cultural since ethnicity and tribes of old doesn’t exist; so the focus becomes more the cultural hegemony of something like White Anglo Saxon Americans with Catholic and European friends, sprinkled with some Spaniards who made it.

  3. Anti Liberalism. Liberlism is an ideology that is usally targeted because liberal legal constructs are mostly always opposed to nationalism and nativism. Right Wing usually has less problems with the economic aspect of liberalism, at least their leaders have (but it’s non-leaders would usually actually prefer social democracy, but only for the Nation and not the others).

  4. Anti communism. This is sort of a given. No explanations needed. Internationalism is 666, the Number of the Beast and it’s economic policies are in direct contrast to what Right Wingers wants.

  5. Chauvinism = We are cool, the others less so. See what i wrote also about social democracy for us, this is usually called Wellfare chauvinism. Very popular in most countries in fact. Explosive stuff if combined with other Right wing factors.

  6. Religion: Our culture comes from one worthy religion, while we appreciate religious liberty, this temple stuff from other faiths is more than a bit too much.

  7. Culture Essensialism = To be an Englishman is something you can define. Not every citizen is one, and only total assimilation into dominant culture can make you one.

  8. Anti Globalism= We liked Mercantilism better, less immigrants then. Impulses from other cultures are dangerous (except if they are from the US) to our culture and this globalism driven by liberalism has made us poorer both in wealth and culture. We have lost ourself stuff.

  9. Chauvinism often, but hardly always, involves irredentism and longing for lost empire or lands. Military expansionism worthy cause quite often. BUT NOT ALWAYS. Capital letters because aggressive fascism isn’t necessary to be classified Far Right.

Donald Trump actively humiliated everyone, except men who ooze masculine strenght, like Erdogan or Putin. I would read less than nothing into Starmer getting “humiliated”. He does it to literally everyone except a merry few not so democratic leaders.

it would, except Uncle Trump made it into a Game Show. Laughing at his jokes is expected. You literally risk your country being sanctioned in a minor way if he takes the slightest offence.

I am not trying to be difficult here, Rambler. I agree with you ! It IS unseemly, but I don’t know if you saw the entite press conferance, but it’s a Game Show. His Game Show. He does not accept resistance and you have to be diplomatic and pick your battles. This probably means laughing from his tasteless jokes and etc.

Apologies, I did not see this before making my own little contribution above.

Yours is better anyway. I didn’t take the time to write it up in any form or way as good as you did. I didn’t want to spend the time.

Agreed.
