I’m not sure whether Trump’s u-turn on the Diego-Garcia hand over can be seen in any other way than to influence internal UK political outcome. Yes it serves his Greenland grab but it is now looking like Farage is a lot closer to the throne than ever. Who would have thought that a year ago…
I didn’t mention this yesterday, because I was challenging another poster.
My understanding is that the deal will see the UK leasing the Island back on a 99 year term, with option to extend.
The history gets a bit confusing and I don’t know how it plays into the current scenario. My very loose understanding is that the UK obtained ownership of the Islands from France, made some kind of agreement financially with Mauritus, on the basis of America paying us. We then compensated the non military occupants to relocate. The UK’s rights to the Island and Marine area was challenged which went against us which is why we have negotiated this deal.
I havent had time to research all the implications so basically No clue on what it all means politically
.
It could be that this is all a face saving play by Trump after Starmers press conference yesterday.
Maintaining his reasoning for Greenland by deflecting onto the UK weaknesses, whilst not personally directing it at Starmer. Shift the focus, leave us questioning ourselves, appear strong, etc.
Update, BBC showed a dated clip of Trump being positive about the deal ![]()
Most craven political message I have seen for a few days (yeah, I read a lot and see a lot):

Notice her extremely short “by the way” sentence.
Isn’t the deal to hand them back to Mauritius (they were part of Mauritius before Britain bought them in 1965) but crucially, in terms of security, a 99 year lease keeps the military base intact. And the 99 years comes with an option to extend?
If I’ve got that right, it seems like a good thing. Win-win. Mauritius gets its islands back, but the military base is secured into the future.
Not sure what Trump is spouting off about, other than the fact he’s very unstable, to say the least.
His probably confused it with that island that has the underage sex parties.
Pathetic, the brass neck on her. Negotiations on the Chagos deal started in November 2022. Who was in government back then I wonder? Of course it was ratified by Trump back then too.
But facts and history don’t matter any more.
Sorry dude, hectic few days, you deserve a reply.
That’s def not going to happen. As has been noted above, there is a leasing agreement in place that will maintain the base.
Personally, I just can’t get past the conclusion that any politician moaning about Chagos simply isn’t willing to relinquish the old imperial tropes.
And as I pointed out to whatsisname, my initial point was really only tangential to the specifics of the Chagos issue, which is concluded (as much as anything can be concluded in the current context). I was critiquing Rosindell’s citing of the long-settled issue, but given Cuntface Farage’s proximity to his Orange Sex Idol, they probably knew it would come up this week and just saw an opportunity to appear ahead of the curve.
What a time to be alive, eh?
‘thank you for your attention to the matter’

New battle lines have been drawn
I maybe be wrong, but I assume by “whatsisname” [sic] you are referring to me
.
I can’t be bothered wasting my time correcting you on your initial point, it’s in the threads history. ![]()
You posted this:
You never did provide your posting history, which you claim supports your notion that the Strategic Importance “assumption” supersedes the rights for the people who actually live there.
The thing is the Islands were “allegedly” uninhabited when the French colonised it and transferred African Slaves to work on Plantations. These Islands were grouped with Mauritus/Seychelles as a French Colony and were ceded to the British after the 7 Year war.
The land, was and never has never been owned by the Slaves, Plantation owners but by a Seychelles company which sold the land to the British Government in 1967.
The Islands were removed from Mauritus autonomy as part of the agreement of Independence.
The thing is no one has lived there since 1971 when the families were forced off the Island - A recorded figure of 426 families a total population of 2300. The British allocated £650k in 1972 as compensation to the families and a further £4m to a total of 1,579 was paid to renouncing any right of return.
As part of the new deal, Britain agreed to put £45m into a community fund for the 4000 descendants.
So I disagree with you on that point.
But I do agree with you that he has been informed or read the situation really well to use that as a reasoning.
Sovereignty of the Island was determined by International Court of Justice after a challenge of ownership by Mauritus. This was made in 2019 so the Tories had to engage and Labour sign it off.
So technically it is no longer ours to give away. Whether the deal could be better or not, who knows but reading a report, will post later we are are allowed to sublease and to whom. So the US, maybe this provides us a small bit of leverage going forward. ![]()
EDIT: ignore me, I can’t be arsed.
I think Rosindell is a cunt, happy to be proven wrong.
Absolutely.
Worth a read. Not sure how people think what happened is ok because it was in the past.
'It happened years ago, why don’t you just move on from the past?!
‘We’ve been doing that forever! We can’t stop doing it now! The past is important!’
Must be exhausting to be so vacuous.
Meanwhile…Nige is out there in Davos fighting for the common Brit at a billionaire’s expense.
Mate, iv agreed with you twice on this. I am not trying to prove you wrong because I don’t disagree with you.
Like I have said, I know nothing about him. He means nothing to me. I go on the basis of them all being lying c**ts that way I don’t get wound up. You should try it, it’s better for your health ![]()
