I have seen some reversal of this in recent months. For example, I have seen English Cheddar and Red Leicester on sale in Germany.
The problem they are up against is that other similar products have taken the place of ones from Britain. For example, Irish Cheddar is pretty much the default now.
These fuckers voted for Brexit.
When you read it all there’s quite a few stumbling blocks being demanded by the farmers union that at least the French will resist.
I wonder what the percentage drop is going the other way?
Extra mature cheddar beats any of that foreign stuff imho. My absolute favourite supermarket cheddar is Tickler’s extra mature. Tesco sell it but probably available elsewhere.
Starmer must stay on. The Labour party need to give their heads a collective wobble. We need some stability and anyway the alternatives look much much worse. We do not need a General Election any time soon .. for obvious reasons.
I avoid Red Cheddar as well however it’s not foreign, it was just an English variant and probably more common than the ‘yellow’ stuff before ‘Government Cheddar’. Government Cheddar was the killer for English Cheese industry before that there was possibly greater variety of cheeses in the UK than France (over 3000).
Still 'English Cheddar’s remains one of my favourites (not that I’m much of of cheese eater) however it needs to be a decent one. That sliced plastic stuff gets thrown straight in the bin when my daughter brings it home for burgers . Living in France I replace it with Comté and grate it like one would Cheddar.
We diverge .
Our local Carrefour has Wyke’s extra mature cheddar - always good to have about the fridge for sandwiches or crackers.
edit - the contortions that Labour are going through to appear holier than thou is only leading the government in one direction - down. It’ll be the same with the Democrats. Politics is a dirty business and the cost of appearing to be above it all is not likely sustainable.
When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside.
So what about the person that actually made the appointment?
Does the same principle not apply?
I think Starmer’s position is weaker now. I would have thought it better to lay this squarely on Mandelson lying and misleading.
