UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

i actually dont have an issue with there being a stigma for being ‘un australian’…there are many distinctly ‘Australian’ traits that we should uphold and be proud of…

its just when politicians decide to frame the phrase and decide what is and what isnt ‘australian’ that it all turns to shit.

its funny, but to simply enter politics and behave like a politician is probably more ‘un australian’ than most of the things they like to demonise…

That sort of term always reminds me of the House Committee on Un-American Activities

I think she is using it in a “not playing cricket”, lack of fair play kind of way. I think the “not cricket” phrase would have been a better way of putting it.

It always bothers me when people start using these sorts of phases, because it is usually to other an ethnic, religious or other minority group.

I think it means acting in a way that would be beneficial to the country under the prevailing circumstances, rather than carrying on in a way that has caused massive division and unrest on an unprecedented scale.

The problem is, what you believe to be the problem is different from what others believe to be the problem. How can a country go on so divided?

Correctamundo.

Not sure whether this belongs more here or on the Iran war thread, but the wholesale price of UK gas has now more than doubled over the last month:

To give a perspective, this is the 5 year chart which shows the effect of the Ukraine war:

There has been a significant reduction in UK gas consumption since 2022 so it remains to be seen how high this peak goes.

But north sea oil and gas are running out and wont last long!

At least that was the message in 2014 during the Scottish independence referendum!

Maybe they will suddenly find a love of the proportional representation system?

They also seem to forget the mobilisation period to get rigs into position and so on. And of course that depends on whether the fields are viable as you say. I know drilling tech has moved on to allow more extraction from existing wells and the like. And maybe they found more.

It’s a fart in a hurricane
