This was the point the copper was making the other night. Reporting crime is not just about getting the crime solved or getting justice. It’s also about making sure there is an accurate picture of crime so decision’s can be made about resourcing to tackle it in the future.
The two examples you gave aren’t great ones. Shop-lifting and burglary will usually be reported.
So I did some digging and it seems I paid the average price, or there abouts, at £1.07p a litre.
There are some supply issues, more driven by the volatility in the market more than anything. I had scared myself into a price of £1.75p a litre.
I’d bet my mortgage he thinks Argentina is sandwiched between Turkey and Azerbaijan, and that the Falklands is that place in Scotland with the big wheel thingy that lifts canal boats up and down.
That’s funny, and I’m sure they all had a good laugh about it back at the station.
So people who have just been burgled or had their shop stripped of 200 quids worth of booze will think " well, it’s not worth reporting this because fuck all will be done about it but I’ll report it anyway so an accurate picture can be built up so decisions can be made about how resources can be used tackling it in future"?
On a scale of 1 to 10 how likely is that?
As for bad examples, shops all over the country are being fucking fleeced and everyone knows fuck all is being done about it. Nobody has a clue how much of it is reported.
The Argentinian Right think they are going to war with Britain with Trump’s blessing ( I am not saying that is “factual”). Just mentioning it. You will read a lot about this in the coming months, I suspect.
Social media, in just 2-3 days, have become full of Argentinian chauvinistic threats, boosted by Americans and Israelis, after Mlei’s and Trump’s conversation.
The argument is: Muslims have taken over the UK proving that the UK lacks steel and ladida, the UK no longer have a navy to project force and defend it, and it’s currently very weak. So the timing is going to be favourable and blah blah.
That’s a really absurd position. Not only do the police have to work beyond the limits of their capacity to solve every minor crime that ever happens, they’ve also got to be psychic so they can know those crime have happened without anyone telling them.
(Those examples are poor because you need to report a crime before you can claim on insurance)
The coppers points - which I think are inarguable - we can’t respond to absolutely everything with the resources we have, but if you don’t report, then a) we don’t even know about it and b) when I’m arguing with senior leadership for more resource to get devoted to the this matter, I can’t make the case.
I very much doubt many small, independent shop-owners have insurance against shop-lifting given the premiums would be sky high and burden of proof.
Most will just take it on the chin and not bother reporting it knowing there is pretty much no chance of getting anything back.
So many people have been feeling the pinch these last few years, which the quaintly named “trickle up” has been a torrent. It’s no coincidence we have seen a general upturn in shoplifting as people struggle to feed their kids and themselves. The big stores can afford heightened security and the smaller places are relatively easier to hit. I know that not all crime is driven by desperation but it’s become a significant factor. Until government looks at these issues, such as high prices coupled with low wages, it won’t matter whether police monitor this or not. People need to have a reasonable standard of living, not just survive on the bare minimum.
This trend is very, very noticable on social media and personally, I am enjoying the hell out of it (one of the few things I enjoy on that topic).
Chauvinists versus chauvinists, a lot of UK right wingers are foaming at the mouth now. It’s very positive for UK political stability if the Nationalists are in sync with the left as well as centrists on this explosive topic. Why ? Because usually, the European Far Right acts as Trump’s Fifth Column and will support MAGA over their own national interests. https://x.com/ChrisO_wiki/status/2048142794435236158
Note: This isn’t a defence of nationalists, but they are a growing political segment in the UK that no one can just wish away. If their ire is more focused on US mockery and threats, that is good for stability.
Addendum:
Hopefully the rest of the European Right Wing, including in my own country where the right wing is ultra loyal to Trump over Norwegian interests, will also wake up and abandon MAGA. They are a plague as it is, we do not need them to carry water for hostile foreign interests.
