UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

I get very bad vibes from him. Someone who will say or do anything to get in power. Some people enter politics because they have a sense of duty and become leaders because they feel responsible. Some want to be in a position of power because it makes them look important and everyone has to respond to their every whim. I get the latter feeling with him.

I may be completely wrong about him, of course. I just prefer those that are attracted to responsibility rather than self empowerment.

This is a fair assessment of Streeting, imo. The vibes are way off…

As an aside, I actually think Starmer is covered by the bolded part…it’s just that he has literally no idea how to be a PM and hence has been bitterly disappointing and is most likely done for…

I think he has no idea how to be a politician. He was a senior civil servant (Director of Public Prosecutions) which is specifically meant to be an apolitical brake between government and the legal system to prevent political interference. He seems to treat being PM as simple ensuring legal process is carried out (which in itself is a good thing) without offering any and executive guidance.

Yeah, probably a better assessment than mine.

I’ve seen a couple of videos from Owen Jones recently, not something I’d normally watch but there you go. He is of the view that the Labour party has been hijacked by a group, of which Mandelson was a big part of and Starmer their selected leader. A much darker view than @RedWhippet’s above.

No idea really but it kind of lines up with our shaded reality, as many conspiracies do. I’ve long had a theory that Starmer was following a Blairite type ideally of claiming the middle ground. That kind of lines up with it I guess.

Either way they are unrecognisable from what you’d expect from a traditional Labour party.

Lots of things make no sense in politics which should surprise no one,but if Labour is stupid enough to elect Streeting all the major parties look like dunderheads.
Ange is probably the best bet, people actually like her..against Kemi and Fartage she would be a shoe in.

Charlie is not quite as stupid as Trump, then who is?

Do you think the more you say this, the more chance there is of it being true?

Your words.

You must be a sadomasochist to keep putting yourself in this pain of replying to him🤣

When you live in a society where burglary and shop-lifting aren’t deemed worthy of police involvement I wouldn’t pay any attention to official statistics either.

Really? Are you sure about that? ..have you found someone who actually rates her because I haven’t.

To me she is a total light weight. Appointing her would be a disasterous step for Labour.

From an IPSOS poll the other day…

As of April 2026, Angela Rayner’s public favourability is poor, with roughly 24% viewing her favourably and 46% unfavourably. While she maintains support among Labour members, she is seen negatively by the wider electorate, holding a net rating often around -29 to -38.

Whether or not they get a police response is irrelevant to whether they are recorded as crimes. I was literally talking to a copper about this on Wednesday night.

It seems Trump might (I don’t know, who knows?) recognice Argentina’s claim to the Falklands to punish the UK.

That depends on whether the victim can even be arsed reporting it knowing fuck all will be done.

You have to for insurance don’t you?

I have to agree with police attitude to burglary and certain other crimes. Fill in the forms and radio silence.

Looking at what the die hard Tory / Reform supporters and Trump followers think of that.

Many will blame it on Starmer and Labour for not going all in with the US. Facts and analysis of the wisdom of doing so does not matter, truth does.
And a spiritual truth is seldom fact based.

Indeed. There is some small joy in watching these people twisting themselves into knots. Obviously the problem with this stuff is it’s so serious and threatening.

Still there was some fun watching Farage go full Trump and then try to reverse, when Iran closed the Strait. He is so transparent and actually a bit dumb. And he’s the best of that bunch.

On other matters my heating oil arrived at last. Some misunderstanding it seems. Price was actually a lot better than expected. Don’t know if I’d been given a friendly discount on that or not. Just in time for Summer. It’s roasting here today.
And peace once more ensues in the Noo Noo household. No more evil looks while the boss stomps round the house in her coat.

Retail pricing always factors in storage. Heating oil has already been refined, it makes far more sense for them to clear their inventory for the next six months than to hold it in tanks - particularly with broader volatility in the oil market, although no one is storing crude or diesel right now (the ‘backwardation’ Bessent is saying is a good sign is at least in part a function of the fact that physical oil on the spot market is far above WTI/Brent month forward contracts)
