UK Politics Thread - read the rules before posting!

The initial exchange that caused all this was one of the most obvious cases of people talking at cross purposes (I hope that’s the correct English phrase).

It would be hilarious if the UK treated the referendum seriously, threw a border around the village, and then made them issue their passports to get in and out, slap tariffs and duties on goods and services, stopped people working outside Piddington without a Visa. It wouldn’t feel so jolly japes then.

Fundamentally this is NIMBYism to an extreme degree. We have people entering the country and they need to be accommodated while their claim is processed. Somewhere has to take them, and Piddington’s argument seems to be essentially ‘Not us - send them somewhere else’.

Maybe time to delete the 2 posts then?

Can I appoint my self as the self elected leader of The Democratic People’s Republic of Wimbledon.

All future leadership challanges will be resolved by last man standing trial by combat.

*Unless you have bone spurs preventing you from participating, in which case you must start with Granddaddies gift of billions of £ and lose it by bankrupting your own university and casino

Edited , if this was the case, with your leadership you’d be in power for all of 5 minutes.

I don’t know the ins and outs of how it works in england, and I might be thinking this place is a little village in the middle of nowhere but it does seem an awful lot of people if those 1250 are free to integrate into a village of 400 residents. Is the village capable of catering for their medical needs, schooling/education. Are local shops of a size to be capable of storing/supplying enough food for the extra 1250. Is it just men or are there going to be families. How long are they going to be there?

Its not going to be in the village. The proposed site sits between three villages, of which this is one.

I havent seen any further details yet though.

It’s an MOD site where surely there’s been large numbers of men in the past and maybe up until recently.
Your correct if these villages were being asked to integrate these 1000+ men so more details would help in understanding all this however without details what can we say?
If it helps and speeds up the processing surely it’s should be seen as a good and helpful development.

Highly unlikely that if they end up being there for any length of time that they won’t be allowed leave to interact with local communities.

I live near a similar centre in Ireland and used to leave near another one not to far away. Once they spend time in these centres the residents do tend to leave daily, interacting with communities and using similar, already strained resources. Governments will tell you they’ve looked at everything and worked it all out but all they really done is said “put them somewhere”,when engagement, consultation and investment in local communities is what’s needed to make it work.

It’s an ex MOD airbase some way outside the village, and they will be there while they await processing.

So only a few days before heading off to different centres?

If not, then it tends to be months, if not longer. It’s not a prison so the chances are they can leave during the day. If it’s only a few miles from the villages the will walk or take a bus if one passes nearby.
Are the government looking after all their essential needs, medical and food?

From reading the article there doesn’t seem to be any of that information nor does there seem to be any engagement with the local community who will have to accommodate these needs if the government don’t provide by having medical personal on site along with facilities for cooking food etc.

Sure, but they’re unlikely to be descending on just one of the villages, when they do go out.

Arncott where the other two villages are located has a population of 1600+ (according to google).

And, perhaps they may look to travel further.

Sure and it’s for the government, civil service, judicial services, lawyers and associations to make sure it runs smoothly.
For the local MP to get the best information and communicate with his constituents.
So as I said without details we can not go about jumping to pre conceived ideas.

There’s a hotel near me used to house refugees and honestly they are less bother than tourists during the summer. They are noticed during the winter but not to any worrying degree.

We did have a Foreign Legion Battalion based in the town and that was very noticeable, particularly when they left as a number of bars and takeaways closed down.

The question is what do you want?
For things to improve or degrade. I know many want things to degrade so they can be even more annoyed however the country needs solutions. Nothing is going to be perfect it never is.

What the locals need are guarantees and an MP that cares about the situation.

Could your community accommodate a doubling of residents in a very short period of time, I know that resources(doctors/dentists etc) in my area would struggle to handle a large influx compared to what’s already here.

If your concerned about that spend some time to find out before basing everything on an article who’s objective wasn’t to cover that.

It’s exactly what I’ve been saying and warning against. Your trying to find things to be annoyed about without making the effort to find out what’s planned by the civil service and government.

I’m not doing it for you though I will call you out for not doing it if you insist.

I don’t live in England so what they do there is their business. I have absolutely no problem with my country taking in people from areas where they need to escape and integrating them properly into society. I’ve no problem with going around the world looking for people to help with whatever industries, professions need more staff. I couldn’t care less where you from as long as you are a decent person. But go put possibly 3 times as many people into an area as what is already there is going to cause huge issues if not done in thd right way. And I didn’t ask you to look up anything for me.

I doubt government really think beyond “find somewhere for them”. There rarely seems to be much thought put into how long this is really going to take or how to integrate into society or to discuss with the local communities they are put into, which can lead to conflict. If done properly this can be a positive for communities but the way it gets done, possibly in many countries just causes anoymosity and leads to problems.

Labour plans tax raid on holiday cottages

Labour. Tax. Nothing ever changes. They will bankrupt the country. It’s the same every time they get power.
