Most countries track two measures of inflation, typically distinguished as full basket vs core. The latter is supposed to eliminate goods and services that are volatile and can change for reasons other than textbook inflationary/deflationary pressure.

In the US fuel is excluded from the core, but in the UK it remains, which doesnt really make sense to my limited planet money understanding of economics, but there must be a good reason for it

Yes, that must have been it.

@jaffod I don’t think that reply to Kopstar was anywhere near the good faith standard we’ve been asked to conduct ourselves in this thread. I’ll let the other mods deal with it.

Fair enough, I thought Redalways was very unfortunate to get a days ban for something I took no offense at whatsoever. It’s a very low bar at the moment.

(To add…well done all in here. The thread is actaully much better for it, that goes out to everybody. Who knew the mods knew what they were talking about?)

Is there a reason you’ve hated it?

I’m going to assume that the chances of you ever being in a position in later life where the only income you’ll have is the state pension are extremely unlikely.

Happy to be corrected.

I think many people are under the impression OAP’s are raking it in under the triple lock.
The reality is it amounts to very little.
Currently the rate of inflation is 3.1% () while the rate of total pay rise is 3.9%.
That’s a difference of 0.8%, which roughly equates to an extra 95p a week under the triple lock.
I just hope Andy spends it wisely.

I’m not ignoring your question, but I do want to give you a considered response. I’ll be able to do that tomorrow.

Burnham on the news tonight suggesting Iran might have been involved with the 5 arrests at the RAF base.
When questioned about their release he seemed edgy, spluttering nonsense about them being under the strictest bail conditions.

If Iran were involved, its terror related.
If its terror related there’s no way they’d have released them.

If there were any suspicion it was a terror offence, they would surely still be in custody.

They have been treated exactly as they would have been if they were nicking diesel.

Definitely seems like a honeymoon period, but what’s the feeling in the UK? Is AB the real deal?

He’s actually doing a good job. Yesterday he alienated over 10 million pensioners and tonight he’s come out in support of City’s owners. Budget coming soon where tax hikes will be order of the day.
At this rate he’ll be more unpopular than Starmer by Christmas. Never thought that could be possible.

You missed the part about keeping the idea that the silliness around Farnham obviously involved Iran alive so as not to embarrass Trump and Rubio, but yes.

He is now pointing to fiscal constraints…hmm, Starmer didn’t face those? His basic problem is that he was part of knifing Starmer for not spending on Labour manifesto priorities, but is now in the place to get knifed.

I’ll call you with cheap bus fares, then raise you coz he’s trying to allow football fans to have a pint in their seat at the match

Seriously though, after all the horrendous Tory years it was relief for millions to finally get them out in 2024.
But, one lot of unscrupulous conniving rats has just been replaced with another pack.

Doesnt Andy Burnham have like 1 million far more pressing things to be looking at instead of wading in to protect the state owners of Manchester City?

You’d think, but UAE has a lot of investment tied up in the UK, and they were always going to leverage that in the event of sporting sanctions.

Terrible statement from Burnham. Another attempt to be popular. He will be gone soon. But this is not great.

The statement from Burnham yesterday does cause some concern. I hadn’t realised how much he was in hock to the UAE with their massive investments in Manchester in particular and no doubt the UK as a whole. No doubt he is in under severe pressure now to ensure the punishment is acceptable to them. I still suspect relegation to the championship with a ā€œhugeā€ fine. Behind the scenes a promise they will be back in a maximum of 2 seasons depending on size of any points deduction and an agreement they can deny all knowledge of the sham stuff. Khaldoon Al Mubarak will conveniently be told to take the blame and obsolve them and then disappear into obscurity…
