That’s the whole nature of sportwashing. It’s why they should have never been allowed to buy a football club.

It shows what he is. Popularist chancer. Says anything for a vote. If he could tax them he would!

Utter tosser. Where did the decent thinkers go? We get Burnham, Truss, Johnson. Who last has a view to change the country? Blair, Thatcher?

Oh those 2 changed the country alright.

They changed something. Went with what they believed. This lot just follow the herd.

Blair has never believed in anything unless the cunt lined his own pocket…

Thatcher certainly changed the country. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in now.

You giving Blair a free pass ? Because he’s not a Tory?

Opened the floodgates for mass eastern european immigration .

Iraq war…again Blair.

He did far more damage to this country than thatcher imo.

I’m certainly not giving Blair a free pass, and I’ve given my opinion lots of times about what piece of shit I think he is, but I don’t think he changed the country anywhere near as much as Thatcher did.

Blair largely continued the Neo-liberal economic consensus that Thatcher started, with some good stuff in the background that wouldn’t rock the boat too much. Then he went mad and destabilised the Middle East.

The point was ‘changed’ not ‘damaged’. If you want to have a conversation about which modern Prime Minister did the most damage, I’m not looking any further than David Cameron. Stupid fucker kick started the country starter on a pathway to leaving the EU to try and win a Tory Party argument, set about a chronically under estimated campaign with all the breezy self confidence of a thick public school twat, and pretty much everything that has happened since then is the result of that.

Temporary lock to let things settle down in here.

Actually, sod it. I won’t be the one to unlock this thread. I’ve let the rest of the mod team know I’m done trying to referee this shitshow, which I voted to nuke from orbit originally anyway.

What they choose to do with it now is up to them, I wash my hands of it.

Thread re-opened. But be aware of the rules written at the start of this thread: there’s ZERO TOLERANCE for insults, bullying or even insinuations. Play the ball, not the man please.

Yesterday on First Ministers questions, Scottish Tory leader Russell Finlay asked Swinney whether he’d be questioning Burnhams announcement that the triple lock was to be ahem “adjusted”.

Cue an embarrassing 2 minute rant demanding independence.

What an absolute tosser of a man.

Can I just stick this here as a placeholder:

I think Burnham was very naïve to say anything regarding City. He will have had dealings with them as mayor of Manchester, and he will have to deal with UAE as his role as PM. I just think he would be well advised to remain silent unless it directly involves him.

Anyway, I thought this would be better placed here rather than the City thread.

A more important angle would be the National Care Service as that is likely to have a knock on effect (presumably positive) to the Barnett formula.

So basically using that formula (which I’d never heard of), SNP have the power to leave the triple lock as it is, or counter any other UK government policy/procedure change?

The triple lock is UK pensions, which is a reserved matter and nothing to do with Holyrood.

The Barnett formula determines how much of the UK tax revenue is given to devolved governments. This is a block grant, and any changes to the amount is determined by the proportional change that is spent on devolved services in England.

As the amount spent on personal care is likely to increase in England this would lead to an increase in the block grant sent to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I don’t usually come into the politcs thread, and I probably won’t pop back in for a while.

For a spot of context I live in Manchester and have since 2015. Liked it so stuck around after completing my BA/MA. I work in hospitality. I would say I’m very left wing, politically.

On Burnham, these skeletons coming out of his closet are not the only ones he’s got. His working with Sacha Lord (cunt) has done a lot of damage to nightlife and hospitality in the city. That won’t be the black mark on him either.

I suppose, as with all things politics, once brought out of mind and into reality any sense of moral absolutism is replaced with relativism. Is he worse than what has come before? I don’t know, but I probably err on the side no. The bar from the past fair few PMs is deep in the bowels of an unholy beast darker than Ungoliant, so I wouldn’t necessarily call that an achievement. Is he good/clean? No. Not at all. Though I suppose that is all of the political class (maybe I’m just cynical and bitter, but I dont have an ounce of trust or faith in any of them, no matter their place on the spectrum).

This current mess he has landed himself is one that existed before he came to Manchester, but it is one he has not navigated well or appropriately. Especially so now that he is PM.

And with that, I’m going to leave this thread again. See you all in the nicer threads

I’m not going to bat for Burnham too strongly, because I think he has let himself down with his interjection into the City business.

But on the issue of welcoming investment into Manchester from UAE it has to be taken in the context of what was happening in Local Government at the time. All local authorities and regional mayors were under immense pressure to deliver meaningful and rejuvenate their areas, but there was absolutely no money coming from Central Government to help with that, and that was more so for Labour Controlled authorities. No mayor at the time was going to turn down billions of investment from anywhere.
