US Election 2024

Yes, let’s all ignore the massive red flag that no one should be permitted to control government policy in areas where they have conflicts of interest.

Rules are for plebs anyway.

With all the ego maniacs getting getting placed into prime positions… Only a matter of time before some serious in-fighting commences…
I feel as though the whole thing is beginning to be treated like some instant fame, make me rich quick, gameshow.

Were you not around for 2017-2020?

Didn’t take as much notice of Trump back then…
The world seemed a tad better place

It was a cynical ploy intended to take advantage of the backlash to defund the police. Both retail and police organizations told a story about crime was soaring because police had been defunded by crazy democrats, despite 1) covid crime surges being completely unrelated to policing levels or spending, 2) most Dem cities responding the defund controversy by proactively increasing funding for police. So in most places where crime was surging it was in the face of increased police spending. It’s funny right, the made up data showing decreased policing leads to crime validates their world view, but the actual data showing that increased police funding doesnt actually lower crime is not even acknowledged.

But the story is too good for both parties to drop, especially when the average person is so inclined to believe it.

All of these stories are just celebrations of ignorance…“fnar, i bet the experts have never thought of this thing I came up with after 2 seconds of thinking about something.”

The bit that drives home who stupid the DOGE is can be seen in Musk’s seemingly brilliant revelation that their actions “will be posted to the internet”. Yes buddy, that is how government works.

Which is exactly the problem with a lot of his supporters, especially some on here.

They’re essentially children in adult’s bodies thinking they’re the best thing since sliced bread for saying “simples” thinking that every single thought they have is somehow groundbreaking and revolutionary. They are literally the personification of the Dunning-Krueger effect.

I think government waste should be tackled. It is a legitimate project.

With a big fat however…

The way it will happen in the US will be performative. Of course such a large budget with so many lines will have some crazy things in it, waiting to be unearthed. These things will make the headlines and the MAGA crowd will lap it up, and will feel satisfied that the country is getting back on track.

The real story will be that while a tiny percentage of waste will be eliminated, the thieves and crooks in positions of authority, all the way up to Trump, will be engorging themselves on public money, contracts, and all the rest of it.

To use a biblical metaphor, as it seems appropriate to describe what I expect will happen, the whole thing will amount to straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel whole.

It will be a distraction so people aren’t watching the real crimes that will take place.

The reality is that a staggering amount of the waste occurs in the military budget. As the famous scene from The News Room says, the NEA accounts for a penny out of a paycheck. The culture warriors can kick it all they want, but they won’t move the needle until they start closing bases and cutting supply contracts that lead directly to job losses, disproportionately in the red states.

FIFY. Throw the windows open and let in the light. Going to be a rollercoaster ride, can’t wait.

Don’t know what this is but £20 says I know more about it than you.

The only thing that’s missing is that they should make a reality TV series out of it, to point out how they are idiots and how people who work in government might actually know what they’re doing after all?

You mean his god Elon Musk doesn’t know everything after all?

It’s the new version of "they dont want you to know what is in it [the vaccine]?

Me: Have you read the package insert? Or any of the approval documents that are all posted online by the FDA in an easy to review catalogue?

Them: “What is a package insert?”

It wont be waste though in reality, it will be binning things the Trump doesnt like or cant make money on and Musk will single out areas where he can “take over” at the governments expense.

Its the biggest grift in history and in plain sight

But all, lets all be clear this is a trolling exercise so engage appropriately

I literally drilled down so far into one area that I found a $2,000 contract awarded to a nursing home in Northern Maine - and all the details associated with it. Everything is on there, clear as day. It’s actually incredible quite how open it is (and how lacking in curiosity those people are who fail to take the one extra step of looking for it).

The Guardian have announced they’ll no longer post on X. I think that pretty much ends all this debate. It’s like disagreeing with Tony Blair on principle. You can’t go wrong. “Hey Bob” best line of the year.

That was my first thought. Yet, is it ever mentioned by Republican’s looking to cut spending? I admit I don’t live in the US so will miss much of the coverage but what does show up on my media is cuts to the sort of stuff that @Sweeting mentions above.
