Virgil VAN DIJK: 2024/25

Was terrible before Slot came in but yeah our assistant was their assistant wasn’t he?

Grav and Gakpo also only had cameos so they are also as good as rested.

Barney Ronay praising Virgil… through gritted teeth, of course.

For me, he’s the best footballer of this past (and still current!) Liverpool generation.

No issues if the individual that will stand out the most from this era is Salah (players wise, overall it could be simply Klopp), as the “star” player and main goalscorer.

But purely football speaking in terms of quality, being complete, not depending as much on nearby team mates on the pitch, being for me most often a certain in an imaginary world XI, it’s him.

Agreed

Yeah, it’s impossible to compare strikers with defenders. The attributes and skill sets are so different.
However, Virgil is the best defender I’ve ever seen at this club in my 54 years as a Liverpool fan and maybe the best at any club.

I think the gap from Virgil to the next best in his position is greater than any other player.

Alisson is IMO the best Keeper in the world, but there are others in the conversation or run him close.

With Virgil, I think he’s out on his own. His only problem is that sometimes it looks too easy and he does something daft.

If choosing the world’s most complete player in their position over the past decade, it has to be Virg. The most incredible thing is that he never seems to get out of 3rd gear. He doesn’t need to. He’s just so much better than anyone else

There’s a Yashin Trophy for goalkeepers and a Gerd Muller Trophy for strikers.
Why isn’t there one for defenders?
Should there be one such in the future, hope it’ll be called the VVD Trophy.

The Tommy Smith Award has a nice ring to it

Bbc doing a poll on best PL CBs.

Three players share 13% of the vote. Virgil, Terry…and John Stones, whos ahead of Kompany (8%)

Any answer other than van Dijk is frankly ridiculous.

Bit harsh on Steven Caulker, that.

My Man United-supporting mate has always claimed that Jaap Stam was the best centre back he’d seen in PL - and Stam says Van Dijk is better. So, there’s that as well.

The Stones vote % negates the validity of the entire thing lol

I would genuinely put him bottom of that list
