Again he was marvelous today. Never more than on the last free kick where even when the ball was still 40 yards from the box it was obvious whose head it was going to land on.

Yeah, he was brilliant. Reminded me of the stuff he did in 18/19, 19/20, 21/22. Especially the former.

The youth academy of Willem II has today unveiled a special tribute: the main stand at Sportpark Prinsenhoeve will now bear the name Virgil van Dijk Tribune. The captain of the Dutch national team was himself present at the unveiling in Tilburg.

The name of the grandstand is a special gift from the club to Van Dijk: a token of appreciation for the impressive career of the former Willem II youth player, who grew into one of the best defenders in the world.

At the same time, the tribute is attached to the future, because this year Van Dijk will bring the international youth tournament Virgil’s Legacy Trophy back to Tilburg. This not only immortalizes his name in the rich history of Willem II, but also strongly linked to the development of youth football in the city. With this gesture, Willem II underlines the special bond with one of its greatest talents and wants to inspire new generations of youth players.

Tribute
‘Virgil means a lot for Willem II and for our youth academy,’ says general director Merijn Goris. “We wanted to give him something that was permanent. This tribute is not only a thank you for bringing back the international youth tournament, but should also inspire our youth players. Virgil is the example of where hard work and perseverance can lead. With this tribute we show our youth players that dreams are feasible.’

Van Dijk is proud that his name has been immortalized at Sportpark Prinsenhoeve: ‘It makes me extremely proud that the grandstand is named after me in the youth academy. Willem II has played an important role in my life and in my development as a young player. The fact that this is now recognized in this way means a lot to me and my family. It is a very special tribute and I appreciate the warmth and connection that I still feel with the club.’

300 players to Tilburg
The Virgil van Dijk Tribune will be in place this weekend. Then the first edition of the Virgil’s Legacy Trophy will take place at Sportpark Prinsenhoeve, with sixteen youth teams from all parts of the world. The captain of Liverpool is looking forward to the tournament: ‘A lot of work has been done to make this tournament a success. On Friday, 300 youth players from all over the world arrive in Tilburg. It will be a fantastic experience for the players, staff and families.”
