He’s discovered Formby then :+1:t4:

Would you stop, that chap doesn’t look a bit like George.

Wirtz is more than one of the best young players in the world, otherwise we wouldn’t be going that high. He’s already one of the leading players in his position or that zone he covers on the pitch. He’s not a young player anymore.

The lad is 22 he’s not ancient is he?

Look he’s proven but his ceiling is even higher you don’t need to try and disagree with me.

I didn’t say he’s old, but it’s not like we’ve signed a top prospect and nothing else. That normally doesn’t cost Ā£100m+.

Most people in the profession set the bar at 21 for being ā€œyoungā€. Not those who offer young player of the season awards to 23-year olds. Of course experience, quality, mentality, physical development and other aspects can vary from player to player.

This guy is of serious level already, that’s why top clubs wanted him, we paid the fee we paid and will be expecting/hoping to become a key player very quickly.

all true…but the comment was ā€˜hes one of the best young players in the world’. hes 22 years old. its hardly an outrageous statement

It’s not outrageous, it can be part of the story.

Think most people will agree on what is buying a (top) young prospect and someone who is already of a very high (if not the highest) quality (at least in his position), but relatively young or with a lot of years still ahead. Game of words sometimes, no big deal.

It’s likely that this version of Wirtz is already not far from being one of the best players in the world than potentially being 3x the player he’s now, when he’s 25-27. Hence why it is a transfer of this magnitude, not only by the fee, but by reputation.

His current level is the biggest part why he’s here.

I wonder why if he’s soon good I had never heard of him before our interest spiked?

Oh wait it’s because I don’t follow this stuff anymore and don’t care. I only care when I see them playing for Liverpool.

Guys have a query. Why didn’t we give Wirtz a 8 year deal as he is only 22? He deffo is the best playmaker and Madrid will come circling after the 3rd year. With 8 year contract the saga will start only when he turns 28-29!!

Because we aren’t trying to cheat the system like Chelsea.

Mate how is this cheating when your intention isnt to amortize the liability but to genuinely hold on to the player to get his maximum worth. Intention matters and we could have done this for Kerkez and Wirtz as they are young players and will only turn 30 in 8 years !!

Lower contract time frame is also used to mitigate risks, its a balancing act. We could of signed Darwin to a 8 year contract, I don’t think we would have been happy with that. We are also good at resigning players to improved contract when they perform. I personally wouldn’t want a player that is happy with a 8 year contract, I get the impression that it will most of the time be a player with a mindset that would not make them a worthwhile long term asset.

You really want the motivation for the player to want an extension and an improved contract part way through the existing one.

There is also the risk that they pick up a long term injury mid contract. We have had a few players that spent their last couple of years keeping our physios company.

Imagine if we had signed Kewell on an eight-years contract. Or Sturridge. Or Keita.

There is always a risk involved when offering a contract to a player. It seems that at LFC, the board and owners feel that a five-year contract is the best balance between risk and reward.

Also, the incentive for a player to earn a new contract by performing to his maximum shouldn’t be underestimated.

Because as much as we think they are dead certs to be a successful here there’s no way to be 100% sure.

Chelsea have ended up with the likes of Disasi, Badiashile, Ugochukwu, Mudryk, Madeuke, Joao Felix and three different keepers under contract for the next 4-5 years even though all are looking surplus to requirements already. Good luck shifting all them on and not having to cover some of their wages for the duration of that contract.

Paying players to play somewhere else isn’t so much cheating as it is foolish but their original intention was to cheat the system.

Chelsea could theoretically get all their unwanted players to fail drug tests.

At some point they do need to make some money out of them.
