70s is the new 40s. I’m still climbing mountains (smaller ones now) and having exciting trips abroad… I dreaded retirement and left it until 70 but love it now. So much time to do stuff..
The idea of dementia does seem horrific. It’s not really something I ever experienced until relatively recently. I knew it existed, but pretty much all of my elderly relatives died before it had a chance to develop. My grandfather was probably an exception as he lived into his 90s and only really had mental decline in his last few months. Quite remarkable, really, as he had been wounded in the First World War as a young man.
It is both the mental and physical degradation that I fear - and it is fear. In many ways I fear the physical degradation the most.
In my family it is physical aging. Though my dad is 84 and has a form of dementia, vascular dementia, it developed only in the last 3-5 years and there was not a decreeable difference between a before and after, Physically he is much worse and that is the difficult thing to witness.
Am really happy to hear this as I always wish this for people - retire and enjoy some “me” time!
How wonderful. I hope we all get there in decent health and enjoy the little things life we took for granted in our busy younger years.
Here here. 10 months for me. I had a sponsorship off and could have stayed. Sometimes I wonder if I made the wrong decision
Did you ever drink a cockroach?
No but I saw my fair share in Sydney. Especially at the nightclub I worked at
On a personal note, I ended my 3 year hiatus from playing. First game back, played a full 90 at FB and was on spaghetti legs for the last 5 min. Well and truly out of shape, even though I am a few kg lighter than I was previously.
Getting old sucks. 51 in a few weeks
Massively.
my Mum had a saying
‘its no fun getting old, but at least its better than the alternative’
What a day. Knocked off the league leaders 3-1. Scored my first goal (deflection} in 6.yrs.
Just finished playing Walking Football. We did OK. My legs are getting used to it now. Me and Mrs CDO spent the summer/autumn months in Towyn.
Used to go to Towyn as a wee nipper for our annual caravan holiday… Used to save my pocket money to play Bingo in the Black Cat arcade on the front - Once won 10winning tickets in one game for getting four corners on my board…
Exchanged the whole lot of them for a bow and arrow set that was probably worth coppers at best - Some tack given out as prize gifts in them days :0)
Things ya remember eh…!
It hasn’t changed but the latest version is where you play various games, including those coin drop thingies and receive prize tickets which you cash in at the end of your stay for some sweets or a lump of plastic.
Big day in France today . It’s the tenth anniversary of the Paris attacks and there are extensive commemorative services going on culminating in the inauguration of a Garden of Remembrance.
Weirdly Jarvis Cocker gave a poetic eulogy which I didn’t quite follow but just before Macron spoke survivors comprised a choir which did a sterling rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone .
Incredibly moving stuff as France remembers the horror of that day and mourns the victims.
Have you been affected by it? Of course, I hope you and your family are unhurt.
How bad is it?
Thanks my friend, we are fine.
Six people died. Several hundred got injured, but mostly minor issues. The damages are not significant.
The fact is, we are a sitting duck if a bigger one strikes.
Good to hear that you are OK.
